Travis Head was the star of the show as Australia thrashed India by six wickets in the final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 to clinch a record-extending sixth title.

The Australia opener played an imperious knock of 137 runs to help his team recover from a poor start before chasing down 240 with utmost ease. Chasing 241, Australia started in a disastrous fashion and lost three wickets even before reaching 50. David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and Steve Smith departed cheaply to leave their team reeling at 47 for 3.

Travis Head, however, stood firm at one end and joined hands with Marnus Labuschagne to bail his team out of trouble. He and the right-handed batsman shared a mammoth partnership of 192 runs for the fourth wicket to seal the game for their side. Head’s innings came to an end in the 43rd over when he tried to play a big shot with Australia only 2 runs short of victory.

An exceptional day for Travis Head:

Travis Head’s 137-run knock came off only 120 balls and was studded with 15 fours and 4 sixes. Earlier in the game, he had also taken a breathtaking catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma. The Australia opener was adjudged the Player of the Match for his stunning display in the final.

Speaking after being adjudged the Player of the Match, Travis Head began by calling it an exceptional day and expressing his delight over contributing to the win.

“Never expected this, not in a million years, truly an exceptional day. Lot better than sitting on the couch at home. Really glad to contribute, the first twenty balls I played gave me a lot of confidence and yea I was able to carry through,” said Travis Head.

He further spoke about the approach with the bat on the slow pitch, saying: “The way Mitch Marsh came out and took the game on set the tone, we knew the wicket may get tough.”

The southpaw also had some words of consolation for India skipper Rohit Sharma as he said: “He’s (Rohit Sharma) probably the unluckiest man in the world now. Was great to hold on to that catch, who knows he could’ve probably got a hundred if not more.”
