Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed admiration for the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) new Test incentive scheme for the senior men’s team. Rohit Sharma praised both the BCCI and Jay Shah for their proactive stance in prioritizing Test cricket.

Jay Shah unveiled the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for the men’s team after securing a series win of 4-1. The hosts recorded victory by innings and 64 runs over England in the final Test at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.

On March 9, the BCCI offered potential earnings of up to three times their current match fee, contingent upon meeting a minimum Test match requirement. This initiative is anticipated to entice players towards Test cricket by offering significant financial rewards.

Test Cricket Will Be The Ultimate Format – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma emphasized the timeless significance of Test cricket, describing it as the ultimate format. His remarks reflect a positive reception towards the board’s efforts to elevate Test cricket’s status within the sport.

“Test cricket was & will be the ultimate format and it’s great to see @BCCI & @JayShah leading the way in prioritizing Test cricket,” Rohit wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

In a new move, the cricket board will provide extra match fees to regular players of India’s senior men’s team who feature in over 75% of Test matches per season. Eligible players will receive ₹45 lakh per game, potentially totaling INR 4.50 crore for those in 10 Tests.

Players who participate in over 50% of Tests in a season since 2022/23 stand to benefit significantly. For example, those involved in five to six Tests in a nine-match season will receive INR 30 lakh per match as a playing eleven incentive, while non-playing eleven participants will receive 15 lakh per match.

Furthermore, players featuring in at least 75% of matches (seven or more in a nine-game season) will receive a playing incentive of INR 45 lakh per match, with a non-playing eleven incentive fixed at INR 22.5 lakh. The incentives apply to all except those who play fewer than four Tests in a season.

Aimed At Providing Financial Growth – BCCI

In a recent statement, the BCCI mentioned that this initiative not only encourages participation in Test cricket but also adapts to the changing dynamics of the cricketing world by ensuring equitable match fees across formats and league cricket.

“The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce the initiation of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men, a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes,” the statement read.

“This scheme is not only designed to encourage players to engage in the purest format of the sport but also addresses the evolving dynamics of the cricketing landscape, ensuring parity with match fees in other formats and league cricket.”

Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav, veterans of the Indian cricket team, will receive their incentives from the previous season despite their exclusion from the revised central contracts list for the 2023-24 season.
