Former India National Cricket Team captain and seasoned opening batter Rohit Sharma is back in training, and his latest practice session has once again brought his ODI future into the spotlight.

There have been massive uncertainties over the Hitman’s future as India began preparations for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Amid this, Gary Kirsten reveals his Test discussion with Gautam Gambhir in Galle.

Rohit Sharma begins training ahead of West Indies Series

Amid the uncertainties, Rohit Sharma was seen training at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) facility in BKC, Mumbai, as he prepares for the upcoming ODI series against West Indies.

In the viral video, the right-hander can be seen running at the MCA facility in BKC. This West Indies series holds massive significance for Rohit, as his batting performances will decide his ODI future.

The three-match ODI series between the India National Cricket Team and the West Indies National Cricket Team will begin on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram, followed by two matches in Guwahati and New Chandigarh on September 30 and October 3, respectively.

Rohit Sharma's strong ODI numbers

Rohit remains one of the greatest ODI batters of this modern generation. He has so far played 288 ODIs and scored 11895 runs at an average of 48.95. He has 34 centuries and 62 fifties to his name, with his famous 264 against Sri Lanka still the highest individual score in ODI cricket.

After scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs in England, Rohit smashed a sensational 138 off 110 balls in the third ODI at Lord's. He smashed 17 fours and five sixes and almost revived his ODI career.

The Lord’s century ended an 11-ODI wait for Rohit and showed that he can still contribute with the bat in the format, having already retired from Test and T20I cricket. Amid this, Rohit Sharma’s ODI future in doubt amid tension with Ajit Agarkar: Report.

Rohit’s ODI future still uncertain

Despite the Lord's hundred, Rohit's ODI future is still uncertain, despite the former having already made his intentions clear to play in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.

Rohit will be 40 years old when the tournament begins in the African continent, and that’s why the selectors want him to be replaced with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

But the BCCI made it clear to the selectors and the team management that things will be assessed series by series to decide Rohit’s future.

There have also been reports of tension between Rohit and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Some reports have suggested differences over Rohit's future and the team's long-term selection plans.

Rohit Sharma-Gautam Gambhir tensions make headlines

Interestingly, the BCCI has publicly debunked the retirement rumors. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in July that there had been no discussion about Lord's being Rohit's final ODI, while Rohit himself made it clear that his focus remained on representing India.

Rohit has reportedly raised concerns over Gautam Gambhir’s strong influence, believing Indian cricket should not depend on one person. Amid these tensions, the idea of bringing VVS Laxman as team director is being explored by the BCCI. A three-level leadership structure can be formed to bring better balance and help manage the growing differences within Indian cricket.
