Rohit Sharma’s One Day International (ODI) future has taken a fresh and dramatic turn after his stunning century in the third ODI between India and England at Lord’s last month.
There was already a lot of speculation about Rohit’s place in India’s ODI team. Reports claimed that the Indian selectors wanted to make space for young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal while dropping Rohit. Rohit Sharma’s ODI future takes dramatic turn after Lord’s century
As reported by CricBlogger, the Indian selectors had discussed their plans with Rohit Sharma twice and had received an assurance from him that he would think about his ODI future after the first two matches of the England series. But then he smashed a record century at Lord’s.
Following this knock, reports claimed that the former Indian captain was no longer ready to retire from international cricket. The situation reportedly became tense between Rohit and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. There were even claims that Rohit wanted Agarkar to be removed from his position.
A source was quoted as saying by CricBlogger: “Rohit had given the selectors an assurance that he would consider his future after the first two games. But after the Lord’s hundred, he changed his mind.”
Rohit Sharma-Ajit Agarkar tension and Gautam Gambhir concerns
However, these claims have not been officially confirmed by the BCCI. The same situation happened during his Test career when there was uncertainty over his place in the Indian team. He later tried to continue playing, but the selectors eventually stood by their decision.
The same report further revealed that Rohit raised concerns about the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir’s strong control over the national team. Because of this, the discussions about bringing the NCA head VVS Laxman into a bigger team management role intensified.
However, the BCCI already made it clear that Rohit’s ODI future is safe for now, and even the Hitman is likely to be picked for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies at home. Amid this, Devdutt Padikkal breaks silence on fight with Sai Sudharsan for India’s No.3 spot.
India just 6 wickets away from victory as Sri Lanka face huge challenge
Meanwhile, India is currently facing Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle. They are now very close to winning the first Test against Sri Lanka after a dominant day four in Galle.
The Islanders have ended Day 4 at 84/4 while chasing 372 runs. The hosts still need 288 more runs on the final day, making India the clear favorite to take a 1-0 lead. Young spinner Manav Suthar once again stole the show with his stunning bowling at Galle.
After taking four wickets in the first innings, he picked up 2/30 in the second innings and played a big role in putting India in control on Day 4. At stumps, captain Dhananjaya de Silva was unbeaten on 31, while first-innings centurion Sonal Dinusha was on 25*.
The pair will have a huge job when play resumes. Earlier, India bowled Sri Lanka out for 284 before being dismissed for 193 in 48.5 overs in their second innings. Now, Sri Lanka needs 288 runs, while India needs just six wickets on day five to win the Galle Test.
