India National Cricket Team skipper Rohit Sharma will be deciding on his future in Tests for the five-match Test series against England by the second week of May. As per the reports in RevSportz, it is learned that if the senior batter pulls out then Shubman Gill is all set to take over the Test captaincy.

Rohit Sharma's future as a Test player has been in the news for the last few months. The batter has looked extremely torrid in the longest format of the game since the home Test series against Bangladesh. After that, the same result unfolded for him in the New Zealand series, which India lost by 3-0.

Rohit Sharma likely to play Test series against England

Things got worse for Rohit Sharma during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The India National Cricket Team skipper scored 31 runs in the series, and also it was under his leadership that the team went on to lose the series by the margin of 3-1 and were eliminated from the race to the final of the ICC World Test Championship.

Since the last few days, there have been a lot of rumors that Rohit Sharma has decided to pull out of the tour, considering his poor form. But the source close to RevSportz has confirmed that, as of now, the India National Cricket Team skipper will be going to England.

But, he was quick to quip that a lot will depend on his fitness, adding that by mid-May, Rohit Sharma will be taking the call. “As things stand, Rohit is going,” a source in the know told RevSportz. “But you never know. It will depend on his fitness as well. There’s no hurry. By mid-May, he will decide."

Shubman Gill to captain India if Rohit Sharma pulls out

The reports claimed that if Rohit Sharma decides to go to England, he will be leading the team. But if he pulls out, Shubman Gill will be leading the team in the five-match Test series. This is because there is no clarity over the fitness of Test vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah, and the pacer is unlikely to play all five Tests due to workload.

Shubman Gill is the vice-captain of the Indian team in the white-ball cricket. He also has been leading the Gujarat Titans in the league. He has a decent amount of experience as a leader, and if groomed well, he could lead the team for a longer period of time in the longest format of the game.

Test series between England and India is all set to begin at Leeds on 20 June

Gill too, has been struggling with his form in the overseas Tests. Ever since slamming 91 runs at the Gabba against Australia in 2021, he has failed to hit a half-century in Tests outside India, which is the biggest cause of concern. This also has been many criticizing him as well.

The Test series between England and India is all set to begin at Leeds on 20 June. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to name the squad in the final weeks of the IPL. It remains to be seen if Rohit Sharma gets selected for what will be the first series of the new World Test Championship cycle.
