Rohit Sharma to retire after Champions Trophy 2025 final?
According to PTI, Rohit Sharma will discuss his future plans with the chief selector Ajit Agarkar after the final of the Champions Trophy. The decision will be made keeping India's future interests in mind.
The Men in Blue will be looking to prepare the team keeping in mind the 2027 ODI World Cup. It remains to be seen whether Rohit will be available for that tournament and it also raises questions over his captaincy future.
Shubman Gill is being groomed for the role and is likely to become India's captain in ODIs after Rohit Sharma. When Gill was asked if this could be Rohit's last ODI match, he clearly replied, "No discussions on retirement".
It is clear that the team wants to avoid such questions and just wants to concentrate on the Champions Trophy 2025 final right now. It is to be noted that Rohit didn't attend the press conference ahead of the big game and it was the vice-captain Gill who did the honors.
India's next white-ball series at home is against South Africa in December. Before that, he will have just six ODIs away from India to participate in ODI cricket. Hence, Rohit might announce his retirement after the final.
Rohit Sharma's future in Tests
In Test cricket, Rohit Sharma's future is in serious doubt as well. He has had a torrid form in the red-ball format over the last few months and the upcoming Test series in England could be his last one in the format.
India will travel to England for a five-match Test series. Currently, Rohit is India's captain in the red-ball format and could remain at his role despite disappointing returns in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where he even had to drop himself from the last Test.
Ajit Agarkar and his selection committee need to be convinced that Rohit is good to play the Test series in England, otherwise, he might not even get selected. India will play a two-match Test series against West Indies at home, and Rohit might play his farewell match there.
Rohit Sharma in CT 2025
