Former Team India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has stated that veteran opener Rohit Sharma could appear even leaner during the upcoming ODI series against South Africa at home. Nayar stated that Rohit will be satisfied with his recent performances, but he isn't going to stop the weight-loss journey.
Rohit secured the Player of the Series during the recent three-match ODI series against Australia. The right-handed batter wants to continue to represent India in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He has shed 11 kilograms and may lose a few more kilos as he focuses on maintaining peak fitness and retaining his spot.
Don't Be Surprised If Rohit Sharma Loses a Few More Kilos - Abhishek Nayar
Abhishek Nayar trained Rohit Sharma for three months before the Australia tour. Speaking to JioStar after the match, Nayar said that the veteran opener might appear even slimmer during India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa. He stated that Rohit is unlikely to slow down his training.
“Rohit Sharma will be a relieved man on his flight back to India. He gave up his favourite meal and the results are visible. The next series is in a month's time and don't be surprised if he loses a few more kilos by then," Nayar said.
Rohit Sharma Under Scrutiny Before ODI Series Against Australia
Rohit Sharma began the series under scrutiny after losing India’s ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill, with questions raised about his place in the squad. The right-handed batter scored just eight runs in the opening match.
However, he regained form in the second match, scoring 73 runs off 97 balls. The 38-year-old then smashed a century in the final ODI match. He scored his 33rd ODI century at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 25.
Rohit scored an unbeaten 121 runs from 125 deliveries, with the help of 13 fours and three sixes. The team chased down the 237-run target with nine wickets and 69 balls to spare. However, Shubman Gill's side lost the series by a 1-2 margin.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Partnership Helped India Secure a Comfortable Win
In the third ODI, Australia batted first after winning the toss. Matt Renshaw scored 56 off 58 balls, and captain Mitchell Marsh added 41 from 50 deliveries. The hosts were bowled out for 236 in 46.4 overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers for India, taking 4 wickets for 39 runs.
Rohit and Virat Kohli added a 168-run partnership for the second wicket. Kohli, who registered back-to-back ducks earlier in the series, scored an unbeaten 74 off 81 balls.
Rohit smashed nine ODI centuries against Australia, equaling Sachin Tendulkar’s record. He finished the three-match series as the highest run-scorer with 202 runs. The former skipper won both Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his stellar performances.
India’s next ODI assignment against South Africa will be held at home in November–December. The Men in Blue will face the Proteas in the first ODI of the three-match series in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30.
