India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma is all set to resolve a lingering fitness issue that has plagued him for years. With no ODI matches scheduled until late October, Rohit Sharma now has a good break to take care of his fitness after the ongoing IPL 2025.

Now, Rohit has already retired from Test and T20I cricket, and there is no bilateral ODI series scheduled until late October. The Hitman will have a rare window that would allow him to undergo surgery on his troublesome left hamstring.

Rohit Sharma plans surgery after IPL 2025

The senior Indian opener has reportedly been managing his troublesome left hamstring for the past five years. He had avoided the surgery because of his extremely busy schedule as India’s captain across all formats of the game.

But now, since Rohit will only play ODIs after stepping away from T20I and Test cricket, this could be the perfect time for him to recover fully and undergo surgery. With the focus now firmly on guiding India through the next ICC World Cup 2027 cycle in top shape, going under the knife could help Rohit come back stronger, fully fit, and recharged.

A source close to the development was quoted as saying by CricBlogger, “If Rohit wants to play the 2027 World Cup, this is the right time to get the surgery done. He has been putting it off for years because of leadership duties, but now the schedule allows him to recover without rushing back.”

Rohit Sharma eyes ICC World Cup 2027 after fixing fitness issues

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has been a key figure in India’s ODI team for years, and there’s no doubt that he would love to continue leading the side, especially with the ICC World Cup 2027 in sight. But recently, signs are beginning to show that his body may not be in sync with his big plans.

Even in the ongoing IPL 2025, the former Mumbai Indians captain was often seen avoiding fielding between innings. Despite that, the right-hander had shown interest in leading India in the Test cricket on the upcoming England tour, but BCCI and the selectors denied it, and he retired from the format.

Well, Rohit’s performances in this IPL season have raised concerns, as his innings have been short and cautious, and his footwork doesn’t look as sharp as it once was. And the reason behind this is his long-standing hamstring issue in his left leg. Despite this, he has scored 300 runs in 11 innings so far.

Hamstring issue affecting Rohit Sharma's performances

It’s clearly affecting his movement and making it hard for him to play long innings that used to be his biggest strength. It is clear that the injury is limiting him more than ever, so the upcoming break could be the perfect time for Rohit to finally get the surgery he has delayed for years.

Notably, apart from Rohit, Virat Kohli also retired from Test cricket, just as the duo called time on their T20I careers after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. Now, both Virat and Rohit will be seen in action only in the ODI cricket, with the duo currently playing in the IPL 2025.
