The ongoing rift between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir has reportedly torn through the Indian dressing room, with shocking details emerging about how their differences started. It is being said that a minor disagreement during the Sri Lanka series soon completely changed the equation between the former Indian captain and the current head coach.
As reported by Revsportz journalist Rohit Juglan, tension between Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir started from their very first series together in Sri Lanka last year. This played a major role in India’s embarrassing ODI series loss to the Islanders after three decades.
How Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir’s rift shook the Indian cricket team
After a quiet Bangladesh tour, cracks widened during the home tests against New Zealand. After back-to-back defeats against New Zealand, Gambhir wanted to bring in Washington Sundar into the squad, despite Kuldeep Yadav already being available.
Gambhir pushed Sundar’s selection, and though the all-rounder performed decently, India still failed to win the match and lost the series 0-3.
The rift deepened during the final test against New Zealand in Mumbai, where the assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who is close to Rohit Sharma, was accused of preparing an unhelpful wicket and using all the bowlers from his personal academy.
A senior member of the setup opposed the move and escalated the matter to higher authorities, adding more fuel to the fire. As India was whitewashed by New Zealand for the first time in decades, both Rohit and Gambhir began running their own shows, as reported by the journalist.
Rohit Sharma didn't have much say in Team Selection!!!
Rohit relied on his trusted allies, while Gambhir pushed his own ideas, creating a divided environment in the dressing room and at the selection table. Well, the situation hit the next level during the selection meeting for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia.
For the first time in years, Indian selectors allowed the head coach to take part in the selection meeting. Gambhir used this opportunity to bring in his preferred players, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana, both of whom had very little red-ball experience, and that changed everything.
Manoj Tiwary warns Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could quit amid disrespect in the dressing room
Meanwhile, with questions growing over the future of Rohit and Virat Kohli, former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary slammed the current dressing room environment that feels “disrespectful” to senior players. He pointed out that this atmosphere already influenced Virat’s decision to step away from Test cricket.
Despite preparing for the England series, Kohli stepped away from the format, as he felt unwanted and sidelined, forcing him to prioritize self-respect over continuing in a setup where he didn’t feel valued. Tiwary also warns that Rohit could follow a similar path if the environment remains unchanged after being removed as captain.
He noted that no player should feel forced to stay where their contributions and dignity are questioned. Tiwary was quoted as saying by CricTracker, “When a player, no matter how big he is, starts feeling that he's not needed or respected, a player with self-respect and dignity will never continue.”
