The former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik heaped praise on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy after the Men in Blue won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies. The Indian cricket team created history by defeating South Africa by seven runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 final to end their 11-year ICC drought in Barbados on June 29.

With this historic title triumph, India became the first team to win the men's T20 World Cup without losing a single game, ending South Africa’s unbeaten run in the tournament and winning their second title in the format after 17 years.  MS Dhoni won the first T20 World Cup in 2007.

Rohit Sharma achieves a number of records after winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 for India

After guiding Team India to a memorable T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, Rohit joined the elite list of Indian captains who won the World Cup for India, becoming the only third captain after legendary Kapil Dev (1983 ODI World Cup) and Dhoni (2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup) to achieve the feat.

He also became the only Indian captain to win a T20 World Cup title. Additionally, Rohit also achieved a unique landmark, as the right-handed batter became the first player to win the T20 World Cup both as a player in 2007 and as a captain in 2024. However, he announced his retirement from T20I cricket after winning the prestigious cup for the country.

Meanwhile, after India’s second T20 World Cup win, Dinesh Karthik hailed Rohit Sharma's captaincy style while highlighting key differences from other Indian captains like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Karthik emphasized that Rohit brings a meticulous approach to leadership, contrasting with the instinctive style of Dhoni and the fiery aggression of Kohli.

Describing Rohit as tactically astute, the cricket pandit has pointed out his ability to assess game-day situations and adapt strategies accordingly. He credited Rohit for his commitment to backing players he believes in, which earned him respect and loyalty from the players. Karthik also acknowledged the role of outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid in shaping Rohit's decision-making process.

Dinesh Karthik was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz: “Rohit Sharma is a very meticulous captain. There are instinctive captains like MS Dhoni; he doesn't believe too much in planning. You have Virat Kohli, who is a firecracker of a captain; he wanted to be in the opponent's face.”

Karthik further said, “Rohit Sharma is tactically astute, also understands what's happening in the ground on that day, and reacts accordingly, but most importantly, I think what he's done is back players who he believed in, and he's given them a long run, which has been the hallmark of why all the players have gravitated towards him as a captain and also a word for Rahul Ravid, who must have helped Rohit in a lot of that decision-making.”

What a night to retire: Dinesh Karthik on Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma's T20I retirement

Speaking on the retirements of Rohit and Kohli from T20I cricket, Karthik said that his former Indian teammates’ retirements were gracefully arranged by fate. He praised both players as legends of T20I cricket and said that it was the perfect time to retire after winning the World Cup.

Karthik added, “What a night to retire; winning a world cup; they can't achieve anything more than this in T20I cricket, perfect timing.”
