Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel has revealed the reason behind Rohit Sharma's success as a captain. Parthiv claimed that Rohit's clear communication with his players makes him such a good captain.

Parthiv Patel has played for Mumbai Indians before under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. The wicketkeeper-batter was a part of the MI squad that won the IPL titles in 2015 and 2017.

In 2015, he scored 339 runs at an average of 26.07 while in 2017, he scored 395 runs at an average of 24.68. Apart from 2015 and 2017, Parthiv Patel won another IPL title, in 2010 under MS Dhoni when he played for Chennai Super Kings.

"There is no grey area with Rohit Sharma" - Parthiv Patel

During a podcast on '2 Sloggers' YouTube channel, Parthiv Patel was asked why Rohit is so successful in IPL as a captain. The former India wicketkeeper stated that Rohit's simple communication with his players gives them confidence to perform.

Parthiv claimed that there is no grey area with Rohit Sharma which makes the players absolutely clear about their plans.

"I think he gives players space and confidence. His communication is simple. There is no grey area with Rohit Sharma. It is either black or white. That matters a lot because the player won't be in a confused state of mind because the captain's message is clear," Parthiv said in the podcast.

Rohit's record as captain

Rohit is regarded as a great captain in both the Indian Premier League and internationally as well. Rohit recently led India to the T20 World Cup 2024 win where his performance with the bat and as a captain were key.

After leading India to the T20 World Cup win, he retired from the format. In IPL, he has led Mumbai Indians to a record five IPL title wins. It is the joint-most no. of title wins by any captain along with MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings.

Besides winning five titles, Sharma is also the second most successful captain in the IPL, just behind MS Dhoni. Rohit has led Mumbai Indians in 158 matches in which the team won 87 matches and lost 67. He has a win percentage of 55.06 in IPL.

Rohit Sharma removed from MI captaincy

However, MI had three disappointing IPL seasons under the leadership of Rohit which led the franchise to remove him from the captaincy before the IPL 2024 season. Hardik Pandya was appointed as the new captain of Mumbai while Rohit played the whole season as an opening batter.

It remains to be seen whether Mumbai Indians retain Rohit before the IPL 2025 mega auction or not. He is a talismanic player and someone who can make a big difference to the team with his skills and experience.
