Team India is going through tough times currently as they trail 1-2 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The batting line-up is struggling to post runs on the board and the bowlers, except Jasprit Bumrah, haven't been in great rhythm.

But one of the biggest problems for the Men in Blue has been the form of their captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit's poor returns in this series have increased India's concerns and a decision on his future will be taken after a discussion between him and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

The situation doesn't look well for India as the team is supposedly going through a transition phase. Recently, veteran offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin retired from all forms of cricket which puts more pressure on Rohit Sharma to take a final call.

Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar are likely to have a discussion post-BGT 2024-25

According to Cricbuzz, Rohit Sharma is expected to lead India in the final Test of the series at Sydney despite increasing pressure on him to take a retirement call. Unless Rohit takes an unlikely call to drop himself from the match, he will continue to lead the team.

After the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a final call will be taken on Rohit's future after a discussion with the chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Although there were reports of both Rohit and Agarkar having a conversation recently it is believed that such discussions will only take place after the end of the series.

The selectors and the team management are currently looking to go through the series smoothly and not disturb the team combination with a big decision in the middle of a big series. Leaving out Rohit midway through the series can prove to be detrimental as he is the team's captain and has led the team for years now.

However, there have been calls for Rohit Sharma to quit captaincy and hand it over to the vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah also led the team in the first Test at Perth and helped India win a historic match with a Player of the Match-winning performance.

Mark Waugh wants Rohit Sharma to leave captaincy

Recently, former Australia cricketer Mark Waugh made a big statement on Rohit Sharma's future before India's second innings of the Melbourne Test. Waugh claimed that he would ask Rohit to step aside from captaincy and hand it over to Jasprit Bumrah if he fails with the bat in the second innings. It happened exactly as Rohit was dismissed for just 9.

"If I was a selector now, it depends on what happens in the second innings, but if he doesn't make runs, I'd be saying, 'Rohit, thank you for your service,'" Waugh said during the match.

Rohit Sharma's disappointing returns with bat

Rohit Sharma has had a poor series with the bat so far. He missed the first Test due to the birth of his second child but arrived in time for the next game. The Indian skipper has scored 31 runs in five innings at an average of just 6.20 with the best of 10.

He came into this series with a poor form from India's home Test season. Rohit scored 42 runs in two Tests against Bangladesh and then scored just 91 runs in three Tests against New Zealand.

The team has suffered badly due to his poor returns and it has reflected in his captaincy as well. Rohit Sharma's body language on the field is enough to tell that he is not in the best phase of his career. With just one Test remaining in the series, the time is running out for him to prove that he is still capable of playing international cricket.
