India's new Test skipper Shubman Gill is likely to take over the ODI captaincy as well, as reported by Dainik Jagran. The selectors see Gill as the future skipper in all formats and consider him for the ODI captaincy role as well.

On May 24, the selectors announced the Indian Test squad for the England tour, assigning Gill the leadership role.

Shubman Gill as ODI skipper?

Currently, Rohit Sharma is the skipper of the Indian ODI team, and Rohit also won the last ICC trophy in the ODI format which was the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. But the Indian selectors are looking to build the team for the next decade.

Gill is the front-runner to take over the captaincy in all formats of the game. Gill was announced as the new Indian red-ball skipper. According to Dainik Jagran, Gill might be taking up the ODI skipper role as well soon.

The right-hand batter is Rohit’s deputy in ODI cricket, and if the management is looking to groom Gill before the 2027 ODI World Cup, then it will be a great chance to give Gill the ODI captaincy at this time.

Shubman Gill’s captaincy record

Shubman Gill doesn't have much experience in captaining the senior team. He only captained India in the T20Is as he led India to a 4-1 T20I series win against Zimbabwe in 2024.

After that, he never got the opportunity to lead the Indian side in white-ball cricket. But now, Gill will be leading the Indian Test side in England for a five-match series.

Currently, Shubman Gill is leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025. Gill is leading his side well as the Titans have already qualified for the playoffs and are table-toppers in the league stage.

The England tour will be the biggest challenge for Gill to showcase his leadership skills.

The Indian head coach isn't in favor of split captaincy

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is not in favor of split captaincy, as Gambhir stated that it will be easier to work with one individual rather than two or more players. But he also stated that it would not be easy for anyone to captain the side for 10 months consistently.

Last time, Rohit Sharma was the skipper to captain the Indian team in all formats, and now, after Gill was announced as the new Test skipper, India have three different captains for three formats.

Suryakumar Yadav is leading the team in T20Is, and Rohit Sharma is captaining the ODI team. If the reports turned out to be true of Gill taking over the ODI captaincy role, then there might be a chance that Gill will become the captain of all formats.
