India skipper Rohit Sharma's mother Purnima revealed his son's message to his family ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. She stated that the captain of the team came to meet her and told her that he would retire from the format after the tournament.
It was a fairytale ending for Rohit Sharma in the shortest format of the game for India National Cricket Team. After trying hard for so many years, he finally had his hands on the trophy as Men in Blue won the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Rohit Sharma captained the team brilliantly and led from the front throughout the entire tournament. He guided the team and made sure that he ticked almost every box right, taking them to the title win without even losing a single game as the captain in the event.
Not only this, Rohit Sharma was extremely top-notch with the bat as well. The opening batter came up with a vital effort for his team at the top and made sure he gave his team an aggressive start. Without even thinking about the personal milestone, the skipper just focused on how he could maximize the opportunity.
Rohit Sharma ended the T20 World Cup as the leading run-getter for the India National Cricket Team. The opening batter scored 257 runs in 8 matches with a strike rate of 156.70. His effort with the bat saw India ending the 11-year-long title drought, having won the last ICC title in 2013.
The World Cup won so much for Rohit Sharma as this was quite evident when India sealed the final against South Africa. The match between the teams went down the wire and it was the Indian team who snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat to win the game by 7 runs.
Rohit Sharma was in tears after India won the T20 World Cup 2024. The India skipper looked absolutely animated as his gestures after winning the tournament went viral. He was seen kissing his players, eating the soil of the pitch, and also was seen celebrating wildly.
He said that he wanted to quit T20Is after this - Rohit Sharma's mother
Rohit Sharma's mother after the T20 World Cup 2024 win stated that she never imagined that she would witness the victory parade day. She revealed that when the India captain told her that he would retire after the World Cup, she told her to give his best. As per Indian Express, she said:
"I have never thought I would see this day. Before going to the World Cup, he had come to meet us and said that he wanted to quit T20Is after this. I just said try to win. I was not feeling well and had a doctor’s appointment, but I still came as I wanted to see this day."
Notably, Rohit Sharma's mother seemingly refuted her son's old remark on T20I retirement as he had said, "I didn't think that I would retire from T20Is, but the situation was such... I thought it was the perfect situation for me."
Rohit Sharma finished his T20I career as the all-time leading run-getter with 4231 runs. The skipper finished with five hundred, the most by a batter in T20I cricket. He also hit 32 fifties and had a career strike rate of 140.
