All-rounder Roston Chase has been named the new Test captain of the West Indies national cricket team. The 33-year-old cricketer, who played his last Test match more than two years ago, will take over the charge from Kraigg Brathwaite, who resigned from the captaincy in the longer format in March.
Chase has captained the West Indies in one ODI and one T20I. His first assignment as Test skipper will be in a three-match home series against Australia. Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has been appointed as his vice-captain. This opening Test will also be his 50th Test match since making his debut in 2016.
Cricket West Indies Appoints Roston Chase as New Test Captain
Cricket West Indies appointed Roston Chase as the new Test captain after an extensive selection process. He was among a six-player shortlist that included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, and Jomel Warrican, who will now serve as vice-captain.
CWI evaluated each candidate based on a "detailed assessment process that included psychometric testing to evaluate leadership style, behavior, and overall suitability for the role."
The final decision was made by a panel comprising head coach Daren Sammy, Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, and Cricket Strategy Committee Chairman Enoch Lewis. Shai Hope, who currently leads the ODI and T20I sides, was not in consideration.

“I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him—we’re building something special,” Darren Sammy said.
One of the Most Comprehensive and Forward-Thinking - Cricket West Indies President
Cricket West Indies President Dr. Kishore Shallow called the leadership selection process one of the most thorough and progressive in the board's history.
"This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken," Kishore Shallow, said. "I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket."
Roston Chase has scored 2,265 runs at an average of 26.33, including five centuries. He has also taken 85 wickets, with his best figures being an 8-wicket haul against England at Kensington Oval in 2019. Notably, Chase was averaging in the 40s after his first 15 matches, including five centuries.
However, his batting form declined over time, as he managed just 1,299 runs at an average of 20.95 from December 2017 until his last appearance before being dropped in March 2023.
