The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may have to resettle its coaching staff as multiple members are likely to leave their current roles with the India National Cricket Team.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is among the backroom staff who are willing to give up his current position. If the former Netherlands batter formally parts ways with the Indian cricket team, then the board will have to name a replacement in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup 2027.
Why does Ryan ten Doeschate want to leave Team India?
As per the latest reports, Ryan ten Doeschate has been in communication with the board to decide his future. Throughout the year, the Men in Blue travel a lot across the continents for back-to-back series.
The gap between two series is very limited, which makes the schedule very hectic for cricketers and staff. While there are multiple talents across the formats to represent the team, the coaching set-up barely gets any long-term off period. Ryan ten Doeschate was appointed as an assistant coach for the Indian men's cricket team in July 2024 as per the head coach Gautam Gambhir’s recommendation.
Gambhir and Doeschate worked together for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former Netherlands batter was the fielding coach of KKR before joining Team India during the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in July 2024.
Ryan ten Doeschate is in contact with an IPL franchise
According to a Times of India report, Ryan ten Doeschate is in contact with an IPL franchise. If things go according to plan, he could join the IPL franchise, resigning from his Team India job. As it is reported, it is the tight schedule of the Indian cricket team that is forcing him to switch jobs, where travelling time will be limited.
“Doeschate isn’t very sure of continuing with this job. He has conveyed his problems with travelling with the team around the year,” a BCCI source informed the media house.
“Sources said that Doeschate may be in talks with an IPL franchise…If things aren’t resolved, BCCI may be forced to send Lakshmipathy Balaji, who was recently appointed as the fast bowling coach at CoE, to Sri Lanka,” the report further mentioned.
VVS Laxman to become an interim head coach of India
After the conclusion of the ongoing England series, Team India will start their preparations for the T20I series against Zimbabwe and for a brief Test series against Sri Lanka.
Both of the series will be on away grounds. For the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, the Indian cricket team will be under the guidance of VVS Laxman, the Cricket Head at the Centre of Excellence (CoE).
For the series, Laxman is expected to take his coaching staff with him. In Sri Lanka, Team India is scheduled to play only a couple of Tests in the first week of August. Ahead of the upcoming fixtures against these two nations, the board may have to conclude the future of Ryan ten Doeschate.
