Star Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is set to miss a few matches in the lead-up to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which will be played in India, after the youngster was hit by a bouncer on the head from pacer Kagiso Rabada during the first ODI match of the five-game series against South Africa on Thursday (September 7th), as per AFP.
According to a spokesperson of the Australian side, Cameron Green will go through an eight-day concussion protocol and will be under observation of the team’s medical staff. The all-rounder is expected to be unavailable till the fifth game of the series against the Proteas.
Cameron Green’s injury is a big blow to Team Australia who are already suffering from injury problems. Pat Cummins, the Australian skipper, has also suffered from an injury but he will make a comeback before the ODI World Cup 2023.
Apart from Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Steve Smith have suffered injuries. However, the team management is expecting that they will return to the squad before the start of the extravaganza tournament.
Meanwhile, Green’s injury gave an opportunity to Marnus Labuschagne to play the ODI game against South Africa and he batted well to steer his side to a victory.
You’ve just got to sit tight and wait for that opportunity: Marnus Labuschagne after Cameron Green’s injury
After the first ODI match, Marnus Labuschagne said that he was not shocked after he was dropped from the squad. The player later added that one has to sit tight and wait for that opportunity.
“I wasn’t too shocked when I was dropped. But I did say (to the selectors) that I still want to be that person batting for you in the middle order. You’ve just got to sit tight and wait for that opportunity and when the opportunity comes you’ve got to be ready,” Marnus Labuschagne said.
In the ODI World Cup 2023, Australia will start their campaign against India on October 8th at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Before the start of the extravaganza tournament, India and Australia will also face each other in an ODI series.
