Tanveer Sangha, on Wednesday (August 30), made a stunning start to his career in international cricket as he starred with the ball in the first T20 between South Africa and Australia in Durban.

The highly-rated leg-spinner recorded highly impressive figures of 4-0-31-4 as Australia thrashed the Proteas by 111 runs to take the lead in the three-match series. Asked to bat first, Australia piled up a mammoth total of 226 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs.

Their captain Mitchell Marsh led his team from the very front, smashing an unbeaten 92 off just 49 balls with the help of 13 fours and 2 sixes. Tim David also played an impressive knock as he hit 64 runs from just 28 balls with the help of 7 fours and 4 sixes. The duo took South African bowlers to the cleaners as none of the bowlers managed to maintain an economy rate of less than 10.

Just like the bowlers, the South African batsmen came up with a disappointing performance too. Barring opener Reeza Hendricks, who scored a fighting fifty, no other South African batsman could come up with a good knock. Only three players managed to touch the double-digit mark as the Proteas were all out for just 115 runs in the 16th over.

For Australia, Tanveer Sangha was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets. The debutant dismissed captain Aiden Markram, Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, and Marco Jansen. Marcus Stoinis also impressed with the ball as he picked up three wickets.

Mitchell Marsh praises Tanveer Sangha:

After the game ended, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh not only praised Tanveer Sangha but also revealed that the debutant was told to get ready for the game at the very last moment. Marsh revealed that Tanveer Sangha was still in the hotel gym when he found out about his inclusion in the line-up.

The spinner was recovering from a long flight from the UK that had landed less than 24 hours earlier when he was told that he would replace Adam Zampa who was sick. Heaping praise on Tanveer Sangha, Marsh said:

“I don’t think Tanveer’s heart rate gets over 100. He was in the gym when he found out and he was pretty chilled and said he’s ready to go and it appears that he keeps it very simple, which will hold him in good stead for top-level cricket. His demeanor is fantastic. I’m proud of him to come in and have a debut like that. He’s got a great smile, so hopefully we see it for many years to come.”

“Like Zamps, he’s a wicket-taker for us. We use him through the middle overs when we know teams are going to have to come hard at him and there’ll be days where they go for runs, but we back them in to take wickets throughout the middle. For Tanveer to come in and fill in for Zamps in this game and do a really good job for us is a great sign for Australian cricket,” he added.

The second match of the series is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 1. Australia would be looking to win the game and take an unassailable lead in the series.
