Newlands is one of the very few grounds in South Africa that offers some assistance to the spinners. However, things were very different in the last Test played at this venue. The game was played between South Africa and India in January last year.
Batting first, South Africa were all out for just 55 runs while India scored 153. In the second innings, South Africa scored 176 before India chased down the 79-run target by losing three wickets. The Pacers had thoroughly dominated the proceedings. No spinner had bowled a single over in that game.
Later, the ICC had rated the pitch as 'unsatisfactory' under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process. Conditions could be different this time and spinners could make their presence felt in the upcoming game.
Conclusion:
The weather report is very promising for the upcoming SA vs PAK second Test. Rain is highly unlikely to play spoilsport during the game. With conditions in Cape Town likely to be challenging for the batters, the upcoming game could also turn out to be a thrilling contest.
