England's Joe Root receives big backing from India legend on nearing his Test record

English batter Joe Root has been an invincible cricketer in the longest format of the game, and even the great Sachin Tendulkar acknowledges Root's dominance in the game, also claiming that he had seen the potential in the English batter in his debut series against India back in 2012.

Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, in a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything session, praised English batter Root as the finest among Test batters and a very special player. He also remembered the prediction he had made to his fellow cricketers back in 2012 during Root's debut series in India.

Tendulkar was recently honoured by the BCCI as well as the ECB, as the boards renamed the Pataudi Trophy as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, after their veteran cricketers James Anderson, the legendary fast bowler, and Sachin Tendulkar, the greatest ever batter in the world.

Sachin's recent take on Joe Root over his legacy in Test Cricket

Sachin was being asked an interesting set of questions by his fans and spectators of the India team, while the veteran cricketer also had some quirky answers up his sleeve.

"What was your first impression about Joe Root? Also he has now crossed 13,000 Test runs and is second only to you and he played his 1st match against you," asked one.

"To have gone past 13000 runs is a remarkable achievement and he’s still going strong. When I saw him for the first time in Nagpur in 2012 during his debut Test - I told my teammates that they were watching the future captain of England," Sachin replied.

"What impressed me most was the way he was able to assess the wicket and how he rotated the strike. I knew at that very moment that he would be a big player," Sachin added.

Sachin recalls the Prediction on Joe Root's Test debut

The reply made by Tendulkar clearly reveals his first impression of the England veteran Joe Root, whom Tendulkar saw as a new cricketer making his debut back in 2012. The Indian veteran looked flabbergasted by a few attributes of the England star.

Tendulkar remarked that seeing him play, he had commented to his fellow teammates that they were witnessing a future England captain. Root made his international Test debut back on December 13, 2012, against India at Nagpur.

With England ahead by a margin of 2-1 in the series, England struggled at 119/4 in the first innings when Root came in to bat at no. 6. He posed a great challenge to the Indian spinners due to his great endeavour in subcontinent conditions.

He faced 229 balls and went on to score 73 runs alongside Kevin Pietersen, and propelled the tourists to 330. Due to his valuable knock, which consisted of another 20 in the second innings, the match ended in a draw, and England won their first series on Indian soil after 1985-86.

Joe Root turned the fastest to reach 13000 Test runs

In the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Root became one of the fastest to reach 13000 Test runs, moving closer to the milestone set by former Indian great Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar sits at the top with 15921 runs, and Joe Root is now only behind the veteran with 13543. He is now only 2378 runs short of Sachin Tendulkar's record tally of runs.

He still has many of his playing days left, and with the good form he is in, he would look to shorten the gap in the upcoming Ashes in Australia.
