Legendary India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has passed on his good wishes to Jay Shah, who was recently elected as the new ICC chairman. Shah's announcement was a mere formality after he decided to contest the elections. There was no need for elections as he was the only candidate for the role.

Before going to the ICC, Jay Shah was the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, that position is now empty and the BCCI will look for a new secretary.

"His endeavours towards prioritising both women’s cricket and men’s cricket have made BCCI a pioneer that other boards can follow."

"I wish him the very best of luck towards the next phase of his journey, as he becomes the youngest chairman of the @ICC."

"India has sent several luminaries to lead the ICC as administrators: Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya, Mr. Sharad Pawar, Mr. N. Srinivasan, and Mr. Shashank Manohar. I am sure he will build on their legacy and take the game of cricket forward," Tendulkar posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Apart from Sachin Tendulkar, current Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Smriti Mandhana also wished Shah good luck on his new journey. Former cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir also sent best wishes to Shah.

Jay Shah's tenure as ICC chairman will begin from December 1, 2024. Currently, Greg Barclay is serving his second term as ICC chairman. However, Barclay specified that he did not want to contest the elections for the third term which made Shah's path easier.

Jay Shah becomes youngest ICC Chairman

Jay Shah's tenure will be of three years after which he can come back to serve as BCCI secretary. At 35, he is also the youngest person to become the ICC chairman.

Shah is also the fifth Indian to serve in this role after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. This remarks a significant journey in his career as a cricket administrator.

During his tenure as BCCI secretary, Shah brought several reforms in Indian cricket, both in national team and domestic cricket. He made sure that the players prioritized domestic cricket more than the lucrative IPL contracts during his term.
