Emerging young batter Sai Sudharsan has been one of the shining lights of the ongoing Indian Premier League so far. The left-handed batter has started the season in an emphatic fashion with some consistent scores under his belt.

Recently, Sai Sudharsan opened up on his competition with the likes of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the opening slot in the Indian national team. While he accepted the fact that the competition is tough, he is focused on improving his own performance.

Sai Sudharsan breaks silence on competition for opening slot

During an interview with TOI, Sai Sudharsan was asked about the high competition for the opening slot within the Indian cricket team. The Gujarat Titans opener agreed that the competition is immense but is looking to improve in every aspect to become better.

"As you rightly mentioned, there are top-quality batters in India, especially openers. I feel I'm trying to improve in every possible area of my game," the GT opener mentioned.

"I keep trying to improve and become a better batter. I feel whenever I get an opportunity, I'll try to be equipped for that and do my best for the country," Sudharsan added.

Sai Sudharsan is rated among the best top-order batters in Indian domestic cricket currently. The youngster has been exceptional in domestic cricket and the IPL, showing his consistency across different formats.

Sai Sudharsan's brilliant numbers

Sai Sudharsan has played 3 ODIs and 1 T20I in his international career so far. He scored 127 runs in the three matches at an average of 63.50 and a strike rate of 89.43 with 2 fifties.

The 23-year-old has brilliant numbers in the IPL with 1220 runs in 28 matches at an average of 48.80 and a strike rate of 141.69 with 1 hundred and 8 fifties. He has scored six fifty-plus scores in his last seven innings with one of them being a blistering hundred last season.

His consistency would force the selectors to think about his selection. However, Sudharsan will be required to play with the same consistency in the remaining games.

The opener has made slight adjustments in his technique to add to his attacking game in order to prepare himself for the ongoing IPL season.

What about Shubman Gull and Yashasvi Jaiswal?

Both Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the future of Indian cricket and also hold the position of the opener across different formats. While Jaiswal is a first-choice opener and one of India's best batters in Test cricket recently, Gill has been brilliant in the role in the 50-over format.

Ever since his Test debut, Jaiswal has emerged to be the highest run-getter for India in Tests. The left-hander has shown the ability to score big runs consistently and can also score them quickly.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is currently India's ODI captain and is likely to be the successor of Rohit Sharma as well. As an opener, he averages over nearly 60 in ODIs and is also a mainstay in the other two formats.
