Pakistan won the match against Sri Lanka, but was eliminated from the tournament because of the Net Run Rate. After the match, skipper Salman Ali Agha was asked about his future as the captain of the team.

On February 28, Pakistan was up against Sri Lanka in a must-win at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Balagolla. To qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, they needed to register a win with a huge margin. Pakistan won by 5 runs, which proved not enough to confirm a ticket for a semifinal spot.

Mohsin Naqvi to remove Salman Ali Agha from captaincy?

Ahead of the match, it was rumoured that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi was not happy with the team's performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, and is all set to make some changes in the team including a change in captaincy. According to the reports, along with Salman Ali Agha, senior cricketers like Babar Azam also can go uncertain for their T20 International career in the near future.

A couple of names also emerged as possible captains of Pakistan's T20I team. Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan can be in contention to become the next leader of the team. Regarding this, Naqvi can hold a talk with head coach Mike Hesson as well. Though, there is nothing confirmed yet.

According to a PTI report, "Naqvi is not happy at all because this time he was assured by the selectors, team management, and his close aides in the board that the team was set to do well in the World Cup."

"Salman, Babar Azam, Usman Khan, and a few others will probably see curtains on their T20 international careers after the World Cup", the report further claimed.

Salman Ali Agha breaks the silence over his future with the Pakistan cricket team

After yesterday's match, Salman Ali Agha faced questions related to his future in the team and his role. Keeping the mystery floating around, the current captain of the Pakistan National Cricket Team stated that he will make a decision as soon as he returns home.

"I will go home and think about it before making a decision about it", Agha said in the post-match press conference when asked about his captaincy.

Being the captain of the team, he took the responsibility on his shoulders for the result.

"I take the responsibility as captain and I think the coach will also take the responsibility", Salman Ali Agha added.

Toss spoiled the party for Pakistan?

The skipper believed that the toss influenced the result of the match. If Pakistan won the toss and went to bowl first, then the winning margin could have been more lucrative, which might prove enough for a semifinal spot.

Winning the toss, Sri Lanka invited Pakistan to bat first. With a 176-run opening partnership, the Men in Green scored 212 runs in 20 overs. Opener Sahibzada Farhan registered 100 off 60, while his opening partner Fakhar Zaman got 84 off 42. In reply, Sri Lanka put 207 for 6 in the second innings.

"If we could have won the toss, the story would have been different. Restricting them to 147 was always tough", Pakistan skipper said after the match.
