Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has heaped high praise on the tactical and leadership skills of former Indian captain MS Dhoni and the most successful skipper in the history of the IPL, Rohit Sharma.
MS Dhoni will go down in history as one of the greatest-ever white-ball captains. The former Indian wicketkeeper led his country to as many as three ICC trophy triumphs- T20 World Cup 2007, 50-over World Cup 2011, and 2013 Champions Trophy.
In the IPL too, MS Dhoni has led his CSK-unit with aplomb over the years. Dhoni has led the ‘Whistle Podu’ gang to three IPL titles and Champions League triumph in 2010 besides leading them to a plethora of finals.
Dhoni’s tactics on the field and his ability to bring the best out of his players is well documented.
Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, has proved his mettle as a T20 captain, having led the Mumbai Indians to a record-breaking 5 IPL titles.
Rohit’s calmness and street-smart on-field calls have often led to Indian players demanding for him to take over from Virat in the white-ball formats.
As an Indian captain, Rohit has led his team to Nidahas Trophy and Asia Cup titles back in 2018.
In a Q/A session on his official Youtube channel, Salman Butt analyzed the on-field tactical skills of modern-day captains.
While Butt heaped high praise on MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, he criticized former Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis and the World Cup-winning English captain Eoin Morgan for the same.
Alluding to the 2019 World Cup, Salman Butt criticized Faf du Plessis’ tactical calls.
“Faf du Plessis is a great batsman, but his tactical decisions in the World Cup in England were not that good. Poor execution from bowlers can make the captain look like someone who doesn’t have great plans. MS Dhoni is a fine example of a great tactician. Rohit Sharma’s tactics in the IPL were spot on,” Salman Butt said on his YouTube channel.
On Morgan, Salman Butt said that the English skipper is almost prepared to give away runs in excess of 300-350 which suggests that he does not have enough pans and strategies to counter the opposition’s onslaught.
“Currently, I don’t think Eoin Morgan is a great tactical captain. He is almost prepared to chase down a total in excess of 300-350 and thus, he doesn’t seem to have great plans to restrict the opposition,” Butt added.
