Rajasthan Royals (RR) stand-in captain Riyan Parag dropped a fresh update on the injury of the RR skipper, Sanju Samson, on Thursday, April 24.
Riyan Parag made the fresh revelation about Samson while speaking at the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Rajasthan Royals toss at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, April 24.
Sanju Samson suffered a serious injury
Samson had suffered an injury in the IPL 2025 match against the Delhi Capitals. While chasing the target in the match, he played an attacking brand of cricket, but his innings ended tragically as he was injured.
Samson slammed 31 runs off 19 balls before being retired hurt. He picked up the injury when he tried to cut Vipraj Nigam and missed.
He immediately clutched at his left side, around the rib cage, and was given treatment by the physio. On the next delivery, which was a free hit, Samson hit it to long-off but was in extreme pain and decided to leave the field.
He missed the subsequent match against the Lucknow Super Giants and didn't travel to Bengaluru for their clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Speaking about Samson at the pre-match press conference, RR head coach Rahul Dravid said that the medical team didn't clear him to play and advised him not to risk injury by traveling.
Hopefully, he'll be back soon - Riyan Parag
Speaking at the toss, Riyan Parag first talked about the pitch and revealed how it would act. He stated:
"We are going to bowl first. When I stepped up, the wicket looked a bit sticky. It will become good as the game progresses. It's about ethics. We have to keep doing the right things and the results will follow. After that, we can go back heads held high."
Riyan Parag further revealed that Sanju Samson has got a tear on his side and added that they were not aware of when the RR skipper would return.
"Sanju bhai is recovering. We are going to take it game by game. He has got a tear on his side. Hopefully, he'll be back soon. Just one change. Maheesh goes out and Farooqi comes in," Riyan Parag said.
The team becomes half when Sanju isn't there - Aakash Chopra
Speaking on his YouTube channel ahead of the match, the former India batter Aakash Chopra said that the absence of Samson is a huge blow for the team, as his absence makes RR half the side they are. He elaborated:
"It's a royal encounter - RCB vs RR. Both are 'Royal' teams. The Royal teams' simple story is that one does not have Sanju. The team becomes half when Sanju isn't there. The batting is not working in any case. Although Vaibhav Suryavanshi played well, will he keep hitting like that always?"
"Dhruv Jurel is unable to finish matches. Shimron Hetmyer, the only overseas batter, is unable to finish matches. Yashasvi (Jaiswal) scores runs but gets out at the wrong time. Riyan Parag bats decently but doesn't finish the match. So, overall, batting has been a struggle, and without Sanju Samson, they will struggle even more," he said.
