Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson had to leave the field, retired hurt, during the 32nd match of the ongoing IPL 2025 against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, April 16, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Sanju Samson faced rib cage pain during the RR’s chase against DC on Wednesday.

In the final over of the powerplay, Samson was seen in some discomfort. On the third ball of the over bowled by Vipraj Nigam, the Rajasthan Royals captain attempted a big shot but missed the ball completely. Right after that, the camera showed the wicketkeeper-batter wincing in pain.

The physio quickly came onto the field to check on him, mainly on his left side around the rib area. After a long break in play, Samson took a tablet and continued batting. However, after facing just one more delivery, he appeared to be in pain again while trying to attack the bowler.

Realizing he couldn’t continue, Samson walked off the field. Before retiring hurt, he played a solid knock of 31 runs from 19 balls, hitting two fours and three sixes. Riyan Parag then came in to replace him at the crease. However, Parag could not make any impact, dismissed for just 8 runs.

Samson’s injury scare sent a wave of concern through the Rajasthan Royals camp and their fans, but the captain has delivered a hopeful sign after their crushing defeat against the Delhi Capitals. Following his sudden exit during the powerplay in Delhi, everyone was left wondering about the seriousness of the RR skipper’s injury.

Sanju Samson shares an update on his injury

However, Samson has revealed that things are looking better than they seemed in the moment. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter hinted that the pain has eased for now, but the real picture will become clear after close monitoring over the next 24 hours.

Sanju Samson said at the post-match presentation, “It feels alright (his injury). I wasn't just ready to come back and bat. It feels alright now. We will observe it tomorrow and see how it is.”

Meanwhile, Sanju Samson has had a tough time with injuries in 2025. Earlier this year, during the fifth T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, he was hit on the finger by a sharp delivery from Jofra Archer. That injury forced him to miss the Ranji Trophy matches for Kerala.

Later, Samson had to undergo surgery for a fracture in his right index finger. Because of that, he started his IPL 2025 campaign playing only as a specialist batter while Riyan Parag took charge as captain for the first three games, and Dhruv Jurel served as the wicketkeeper for the three games.

Despite the setbacks, Samson has shown good form with the bat this season. In seven matches so far, the right-handed batter has scored 224 runs at an average of 37.33 and a solid strike rate of 143.58. His best innings came against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he smashed 66 runs.

The RR will next take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 19 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur in the tournament. If Samson isn’t fit to play, Riyan Parag is expected to lead the team.
