Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has given an injury scare to the Men in Blue ahead of the three-match T20I series against Australia, starting on October 29 at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Before T20Is, they will play three ODIs, starting on October 19 in Perth.

Samson is currently playing in the Kerala versus Maharashtra Ranji Trophy 2025-26 match at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The Kerala wicketkeeper was recently part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph in the UAE.

Sanju Samson shines with a half-century in Ranji Trophy 2025-26, but injury worries loom

Well, Samson marked his return to first-class cricket with a fluent half-century but missed a golden chance to make it big. Playing his first red-ball match since October 2024, he scored 54 off 63 balls with the help of four boundaries and one six against Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 clash in Thiruvananthapuram.

Sanju looked in fine touch, but his promising innings ended when he misread a quicker delivery from Maharashtra’s young left-arm spinner Vicky Ostwal, who trapped him with a sharp turn and angle. Kerala were bowled out for 219, conceding a 20-run deficit after Maharashtra posted 239.

The Indian wicketkeeper’s fifty was a glimpse of his class but also a reminder of the need for longer innings if he hopes to impress national selectors for the ODI recall. Disappointed by his dismissal, Samson returned to the nets later in the evening to work on his strokes.

Meanwhile, Samson had an unfortunate moment during the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 match between Kerala and Maharashtra when he injured his finger while fielding. The Kerala captain dropped a simple catch and immediately appeared to be in pain.

He was later seen sitting in the dugout, looking visibly disappointed and uncomfortable, raising concern among fans ahead of the T20I series in Australia. The extent of the injury is not yet known, but there are fears it could be serious, as the Kerala team physio was seen treating Sanju’s ring finger at the dugout, and the wicketkeeper was seen in pain.

Now, Samson would be hoping that it is not a fracture. The incident happened during Maharashtra’s second innings, and after the blow, the Indian star didn’t return to his duty behind the gloves, which is not a good sign for the Kerala star, especially with the ICC T20 World Cup 2025 on the horizon.

Sanju Samson's battles with a finger injury

Earlier this year, Samson had suffered a painful setback when a fiery delivery from Jofra Archer struck his index finger during the fifth T20I against England in Mumbai. The impact caused a fracture, forcing the Indian wicketkeeper-batter to undergo surgery soon after.

The injury kept Samson out of action for several weeks, ruling him out of the start of the IPL 2025 season with the Rajasthan Royals. Now, another finger injury threatens Sanju’s chances for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
