Legendary spinner Saqlain Mushtaq has withdrawn his name as the spin bowling coach for the Multan Sultans in the upcoming ninth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Saqlain Mushtaq had initially been appointed to the role but faced difficulties due to scheduling conflicts.
The franchise confirmed that former ECB performance director David Parsons will replace Saqlain Mushtaq. David Parsons was previously England’s national spin bowling coach from 2005 to 2007 and currently serves as the performance director for England Netball.
Parsons had previously worked in Pakistan and made a positive impression on Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen during his week-long visit to the team’s academy. He supervised a group of young spinners in Lodhran, South Punjab, during his time at the academy.
Very Excited To Be Joining Multan Sultans – David Parsons
David Parsons expressed excitement about the opportunity to contribute to the development of spin bowling within the Multan Sultans team. He said that he is looking to reunite with impressive young talent, including Faisal Akram, in the upcoming season.
“I am very excited to be joining Multan Sultans for the HBL PSL 9 as a spin bowling coach. I have had the experience of working at the Multan Sultans academy in Lodhran at the invitation of Ali Khan Tareen and I was very impressed by the young talent there. I am especially excited to meet up again with Faisal Akram, with whom I worked in the academy,” Parsons said.
PSL 9 is set to commence on February 17th, featuring the tournament opener between defending champions Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The final match of the league will be played in Karachi on March 18.
We Were Delighted To Have Saqlain Mushtaq – Ali Khan Tareen
Ali Khan Tareen, the owner of Multan Sultans, expressed gratitude to Saqlain Mushtaq and indicated a desire to work with him in the future. Tareen recognized the scheduling challenges with Mushtaq for the next season of the tournament.
“We were delighted to have Saqlain Mushtaq on board because there is nothing better than having local experience and a name as big as his. But, some scheduling difficulties had emerged because of which we had to put our partnership on hold. We will definitely make use of his experience at some stage in the future,” Sultans’ owner Ali Khan Tareen said.
Mohammad Rizwan will lead the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League. The team clinched their first championship title in 2021 and were runners-up in the last two editions. Sultans faced a narrow defeat by one run to Lahore Qalandars in the PSL 2023 final.
