Saurabh Tiwary announces retirement from professional cricket

U19 World Cup champion and Indian batsman Saurabh Tiwary has announced his retirement from professional cricket. Saurabh Tiwary will play his final domestic career match from February 15 in Jamshedpur. While addressing a press conference at the Keenan Stadium, Tiwari informed about his farewell news. Saurabh Tiwary has played 3 ODIs for India which has just scored 49 runs.

Saurabh Tiwary began his first-class career during his teenage days. Tiwary has played a total of 115 matches in first-class cricket and has scored 8030 runs at an average of 47.51. He has slammed 22 centuries and 54 half-centuries during his first-class career and his highest score has been 238.

Saurabh Tiwary has also played 116 List A and 181 T20 matches in which he has scored 4050 and 3454 runs respectively. His highest score in List A cricket has been 138* whereas 69 is his best score in T20s.

Saurabh Tiwary has also represented four Indian Premier League franchises which include Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals), and Rising Pune Supergiants.

As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Saurabh Tiwari stated that he will be bidding farewell to his cricketing journey which he began before his schooling. He added that it is the time to vacate the state spot for a youngster and they are also getting chances for Test cricket as well, due to which he was happy to make the decision.He said, “It’s a little tough to bid farewell to this journey that I had started before my schooling. But I’m also sure that this is the right time for this. I feel that if you’re not in the national team and IPL, it’s better to vacate a spot in the state side for a youngster. Youngsters are getting a lot of chances in our Test team so I’m making this decision.”

“It’s not like I’ve decided this only on the basis of my performances. You can see my record in Ranji and in the last domestic season. It’s always asked what I’m going to do next and for now I only know that cricket is the only thing I know so I’m going to be connected to the game. I got an offer from politics too but I haven’t thought about that.”

Saurabh Tiwary was part of the U19 World Cup 2008 winning team under the leadership of Virat Kohli. That team consisted of Mayank Agarwal, Ravindra Jadeja, Sidharth Kaul and many more players. Tiwary was also a prominent name in the Indian Premier League as well.

He played the first few seasons for Mumbai Indians whereas later he went on to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils and Rising Pune Supergiants. His last Indian Premier League appearance came in 2021 for the Mumbai Indians. Tiwary played a total of 93 games in the Indian Premier League and scored 1494 runs at an average of 120.10. He scored 8 half centuries and his highest score was 61.

Saurabh Tiwary also used to look just as MS Dhoni due to his long hair and also because both players come from Jharkhand.
