Former teammate of Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, has dropped a shocked reaction over Shreyas Iyer's snub from the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025. The former KKR star senses some politics behind the former KKR skipper's snub while also hoping for his comeback before next year's ICC T20 World Cup.

The non-selection of several Indian stars for the upcoming season has been considered a major setback for the Indian team ahead of the Asia Cup. While former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin showed deep remorse for Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal, former selector Kris Srikkanth took a massive dig at the Indian management and Gautam Gambhir.

Former KKR star left shocked by Shreyas Iyer's snub from Asia Cup squad

Amid several critics, Gautam Gambhir's former teammate from India and Kolkata Knight Riders days, Robin Uthappa, has approached the snub with some shock and has claimed the same through his Twitter handle.

Uthappa explained that he was shocked to know that the former KKR skipper was snubbed from a chance in the Indian national side despite having a promising season with the Punjab Kings, whom he led to their second IPL final after assuming their captaincy.

Shreyas Iyer also played an integral role in the Champions Trophy win this season, as he emerged as the highest run-scorer after Ajit Agarkar placed him in the squad.

"There are around 18 T20I’s to go before India play the next #T20WC; not having #ShreyasIyer, who was integral in helping you win the CT, seems strange," remarked Uthappa.

Uthappa is still hopeful for Iyer's return to the Indian T20I side ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup next year

As suggested by Uthappa, India will be playing around 18 T20Is internationals before next year's ICC T20 World Cup, where the Indian team will have to defend their title from 2024. India will host the competition and, as hosts, will also be considered favourites to win. However, no team has ever won the T20 World Cup in consecutive editions.

Until the next World Cup, India must build a new and stronger XI that can defend the title and safeguard the legacy of the veterans. Suryakumar is considered to lead the side; however, Uthappa hopes for Shreyas Iyer's possible inclusion by that time, since he deserves a spot.

"But one can only hope that he gets into this side soon coz he deserves it! I hope they have communicated to him about his exclusion," Uthappa added.

Indian selectors, alongside Gautam Gambhir, have reported 'no vacancies' in the Indian XI as the only reason behind the snub of in-form cricketers

The Indian selectors, alongside coach Gautam Gambhir, have confirmed that Shreyas Iyer or Yashasvi Jaiswal not being named in the main squad for the Asia Cup is not due to any fault of the batters; it is solely due to the Indian 15-member squad having no spot left to be swapped in with these players.

For Jaiswal, they have reasoned with Abhishek Sharma's brilliance with the bat and his ability to bowl a few balls under pressure. While for Iyer, they have cited that since India cannot hand him any spot until the number 5 position, it would be too late for the middle-order batter to come in as a specialist batter in T20s.
