Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi has been garnering the limelight for all the wrong reasons in recent times. Things have only gone downhill for him this year so far.
The year began on a controversial note for him as he faced severe criticism for not playing the Sydney Test against Australia. It was followed by a forgettable debut series as Pakistan's T20I captain as his team suffered a 4-1 loss against New Zealand.
After that, he had a disastrous campaign in the Pakistan Super League too where his team Lahore Qalandars won just one game and finished at the bottom. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) then sacked him as the T20I captain after just one series and reinstated Babar Azam. Shaheen Afridi's performance has not been up to the mark either.
The left-arm pacer has struggled to live up to the expectations in recent times, especially in the T20 World Cup last month where he managed to pick up just 2 wickets from the first three games before taking 3 wickets in the final group game when Pakistan were already knocked out of the tournament.
Shaheen Afridi breaks silence:
Things only became worse for Shaheen Afridi after reports of his alleged argument with batting coach Mohammad Yousuf emerged. As per the reports, the fast bowler had misbehaved with the coach during the tour of England. Reports in Pakistani media stated that the PCB was not happy with Afridi's misconduct and was set to take disciplinary action against him.
The report stated that the star pacer is also unlikely to be considered for the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh. And he has finally broken his silence on the reports, saying that he is unaware of them. He stated that he is not focused on the reports and just wants to play cricket with dignity.
"I don’t know if I’m being dropped from the Test series [against Bangladesh]. My role is to play cricket and I would do that with dignity," Shaheen Afridi was quoted as saying by A Sports.
Meanwhile, Afridi was recently denied a No Objection Certificate from the PCB to play in Global T20 Canada. Along with him, the likes of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam were denied the NOCs as well. It would now be interesting to see PCB's decision regarding Afridi's place in the Test team for the upcoming series against Bangladesh.
