Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the recently concluded Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.
While the former captain played a big role in Bangladesh's historic Test win over Pakistan, he grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons. On the final day of the Test, Shakib Al Hasan angrily threw the ball at Mohammad Rizwan during Pakistan's innings.
The incident took place in the 33rd over of Pakistan's innings when the left-arm spinner was bowling to the wicketkeeper-batsman. Shakib Al Hasan was almost ready to release the ball when he noticed that Rizwan was still not ready to face the delivery.
Frustrated with the Pakistan batter's conduct, the Bangladesh ace vented his anger by throwing the ball angrily towards the striker's end.
Unsurprisingly, umpire Richard Kettleborough was not impressed with Shakib Al Hasan's behavior and was seen talking to him in order to bring the situation under control. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was also seen having a word with the on-field umpire.
Shakib Al Hasan sanctioned by the ICC:
A day after Shakib Al Hasan's misconduct, the ICC fined him 10% of his match fee. The governing body of the game has also slapped the allrounder with a demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. In a press release, the ICC stated that:
"Shakib was penalised in accordance with Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match."
Meanwhile, the ICC has also sanctioned Pakistan and Bangladesh for slow over-rate offences during the Test. Both the teams have lost crucial World Test Championship points for their failure to complete the overs in the allotted time. While Pakistan have lost six WTC points, Bangladesh have lost three.
Talking about the game, Bangladesh thrashed Pakistan by 10 wickets to take an unassailable lead in the two-match series. It is also Bangladesh's first-ever Test win over Pakistan in 14 attempts. On the final day of the Test, the tourists bowled out Pakistan for just 146 runs before chasing down the modest 30-run target with utmost ease.
