Pakistan cricket is reportedly undergoing a major review following a disappointing tour of Bangladesh. According to recent reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering changes to the team's leadership group and coaching staff after the side endured a poor Test series.

Pakistan lost the two-match Test series 2-0 against Bangladesh in May 2026. In the first Test in Dhaka, Pakistan suffered a 104-run defeat and were also penalized 8 World Test Championship points for a slow over-rate. Bangladesh completed the clean sweep with a 78-run victory in the second Test in Sylhet.

Shan Masood Asked to Step Down After Bangladesh Series Defeat

According to sports journalist Saleem Khaliq, Shan Masood's future as Pakistan's Test captain is under serious threat following the team's recent series defeat in Bangladesh. Khaliq claimed that the PCB has asked Masood to step down, but the captain wants to lead the side against the West Indies and England.

"Shan Masood’s position as captain is extremely difficult to sustain. After the Test series defeat against Bangladesh, he has already been asked to step down. Shan has requested officials to give him more opportunities during the West Indies tour and in England. The board currently has limited replacement options, and a decision is expected soon," Saleem Khaliq wrote on X.

The defeat in Bangladesh was Pakistan's seventh consecutive away Test loss, equaling the team's longest losing streak away from home. Under Masood's leadership, Pakistan have lost 12 of their 16 Test matches.

Masood scored 103 runs in four innings at an average of 25.75 during the Bangladesh series. Overall, he has scored 2,653 runs in 46 Tests at an average of 30.49, with six centuries and 14 fifties. As captain, he has scored 1,056 runs in 16 Tests at an average of 34.06.

PCB Considering Mohammad Hafeez for Selection Committee or Director Role

According to Saleem Khaliq, former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has met PCB officials and expressed his willingness to help Pakistan cricket if required. The journalist reported that Hafeez is being considered for a key role within the cricket board.

"Mohammad Hafeez met with PCB officials and has shown interest to serve for Pakistan cricket if needed. He is likely to be included either in the selection committee or appointed as Director of International Cricket," Khaliq stated.

The team's recent 2-0 Test series defeat in Bangladesh added to a poor run in the longest format. It also followed Pakistan's 2-0 home series loss to Bangladesh in 2024, increasing pressure on the board to make changes and improve results.

Younis Khan Emerges as Candidate to Replace Sarfaraz Ahmed

Saleem Khaliq shared that PCB officials are unhappy with the work of current Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed. The journalist reported that the board is considering changes to the coaching setup ahead of Pakistan's upcoming tour of the West Indies.

"PCB officials are not satisfied with Sarfaraz Ahmed’s performance as Test head coach. A proposal has emerged to appoint Younis Khan before the West Indies tour. If Sarfaraz is given more opportunities, Younis may be assigned some other role," Khaliq stated.

The team struggled throughout the series in Bangladesh and failed to avoid a clean sweep. Notably, the results have increased pressure on the management ahead of the upcoming tours of the West Indies and England.
