Former Kiwi pacer Shane Bond has been named as the new head coach of the SA20 franchise Paarl Royals. He replaced JP Dumily in the role after he was named as the permanent batting coach of the South African national cricket team.

Bond has been taking up coaching roles across different T20 leagues. Most recently he was the head coach of the MI Emirates in the ILT20. He was previously the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians in the IPL between 2015 and 2020.

Excited To Join The Group: Shane Bond

Bond left both roles in the ILT20 and the IPL to join hands with the Royals Sports Group last month, and in October 2023 was revealed as the new assistant coach and fast-bowling coach of the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. The Rajasthan franchise also owns the Barbados Royals in the CPL apart from its SA20 franchise.

“It is a new challenge for me personally to be heading to the SA20, but what gives me the belief is the strong squad we have been able to assemble for the upcoming season. We have so much experience and immense potential in our ranks, which makes me excited to join the group in January and work towards achieving our target of lifting the trophy” Bond said in a press release.

Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals Director Of Cricket welcomed Bond into this new role.

“The inaugural season provided us with a lot of learnings after our semi-final finish, and we believe that his experience, commitment and vision align well with our goals for the upcoming season,” the former Sri Lanka skipper said.

The brand new season of the SA20 will be played between January 10 to February 10. The Paarl Royals kick off their campaign at their home ground of Boland Park on January 12 against Pretoria Capitals. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the defending champions of the league.
