PC: X

The Kolkata Police on Sunday arrested three young men for allegedly running an illegal betting racket from inside the Eden Gardens stadium during the India-South Africa Test series.

India started their WTC campaign in England, but gained the upper hand with the West Indies series, when they won the two matches of the series. Winning two games, they advanced to Eden Gardens, where the unconventional track troubled them.

The next match will be taken up at the Guwahati Stadium, where the Indians would look to save the series after a 30-run loss in the first Test. Shubman Gill's return would also be anticipated for a return, after he missed the Kolkata Test and India played with one less batter.

Three people were arrested at Eden Gardens in connection with a betting racket

A cricket-betting case has rocked the first Test between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The officers of the Detective Department and the Anti-Rowdy Squad from the Kolkata Police sprang into action. They were in a joint operation where they arrested three men from the F1 block of the iconic venue for their involvement in cricket betting.

The accused have been identified as Altaf Khan, Ankush Raj, and Patel Pinkal Kumar, who have been reported as residents of Maharashtra, Bihar, and Gujarat. In the latest IANS report, which quoted the Kolkata Police officials, the trio had travelled to Kolkata specifically to operate the betting operation.

It was reported that on Saturday, the second day of play, the officers received a confidential tip about spectators allegedly placing bets via mobile phones inside the Eden Gardens.

Police sources revealed the apps used by the betting accused men

The Police, during their raid, chased down the three men who reportedly engaged in illegal activity on mobile apps like br365, R777, and 1xBook during the match. They had also revealed that a few of them had escaped the scene.

"All three detained persons were thoroughly checked. Some incriminating transactions could be found on their mobile phones. The phones were seized after screenshots of such transactions were obtained... Further investigation is underway," said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.

The case was filed at the Maidan Police Station for several offences, and they were booked under sections 61(2)/318(4) of the Gambling Prize Competition Act.

Team India under pressure after a humiliating loss at Eden Gardens

Eden Gardens hosted the first Test in 6 years, but the red ball fixture didn't quite live up to the expectations of the fans. The Asian side, who were hosting the African giants, failed to keep up the momentum on their home soil.

South Africa are back in winning ways after they lost the first Test of this WTC cycle. They won their second match against Pakistan and now their third against the Indian team. On Day 3, Temba Bavuma single-handedly scored an unbeaten fifty to take them to a 123-run lead.

The rest of the brilliance came from the end of the Proteas bowlers, as Simon Harmer picked 4 wickets, and Keshav Maharaj, as well as Aiden Markram, also picked wickets to bowl them out for just 93 runs.
