India Women’s National Cricket Team star spinner Shreyanka Patil suffered a painful blow while trying to collect a throw during their opening match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 against Pakistan Women’s National Cricket Team on Sunday (June 14) in Birmingham.

Despite not taking a single wicket, Shreyanka played a significant role in the India Women’s National Cricket Team’s commanding 64-run victory over the Pakistan Women’s National Cricket Team in Birmingham. Her fielding efforts were on the spot, but she managed to escape an injury.

The incident happened during Pakistan's chase of 171 runs in the 11th over. Pakistan batter Natalia Pervaiz played a sweep shot towards deep midwicket and completed a single off Shreyanka Patil. The return throw came towards the bowler's end, where Shreyanka was waiting to collect the ball.

However, the bounce completely stunned the Indian spinner. The ball bounced awkwardly and caught her by surprise before hitting her hard. She looked in discomfort immediately, and the medical staff rushed onto the field to check on her.

Luckily, Shreyanka was back on her feet and continued the match after getting treatment from the physio. She was able to continue playing and later producing one of the best fielding moments of the day.

Shreyanka Patil stole the show with a jaw-dropping diving catch

Although the young spinner did not take a wicket, she bowled with great control. In her three overs, Shreyanka conceded only 17 runs at an excellent economy rate of 5.67, keeping the Pakistan batters under pressure. However, her fielding efforts left everyone impressed.

Pakistan's Rameen Shamim tried to play an attacking shot. The ball flew into the air, and Shreyanka reacted immediately. She launched herself full stretch and completed a sensational diving catch while almost flying parallel to the ground. The brilliant effort removed Rameen for just four runs and triggered another collapse in Pakistan's batting line-up at 91/7.

Shreyanka Patil reveals she almost quit cricket after battling depression

Meanwhile, Shreyanka Patil has revealed that she almost left cricket because of depression after India's thrilling win over Pakistan. The India spinner spent nearly 14 months on the sidelines during 2024-25 after suffering multiple injuries.

This forced her to miss the 2025 ODI World Cup, making the setback even more painful. However, she did not give up and worked hard on her recovery and made a strong comeback in the 2026 WPL, where she played an important role in helping RCB to win their second straight title.

Shreyanka Patil told JioStar's Adidas Match Centre Live: “I'd be lying if I said I wasn't depressed or that I didn't think about giving up cricket. That's how I felt initially during the injury phase. But there was a voice inside me saying, 'No matter what, I love playing this sport.' I'm here only because I love playing it. 'So, I couldn't give up on something I love doing'.”

He added, “I kept my head high, my dad kept talking to me, and my family supported me throughout. The atmosphere around me and the strong support system I had—I was always surrounded by great people. That kept me going. I love being back on the field now, and I won't let that feeling go.”
