Shreyas Iyer's snub from the Indian squad for the Asia Cup is cheating against the batter, Aakash Chopra reasons behind Iyer's lack of position in the Indian team, while also dropping massive revelations on changes amid Shubman Gill's return to the shortest format.
Indian batter Shreyas Iyer's snub continues to cause a major stir in Indian cricket as well as on the internet. Ever since the batter has been non-selected for the Indian team, the Indian Cricket fans have blasted the Indian management, as well as chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Head coach Gautam Gambhir for the unreasonable snub.
Shreyas led the Punjab Kings to their second final in the history of the IPL, scored the most runs for his team with the bat. He also dominated the domestic tournaments, winning them all for Mumbai.
Shreyas Iyer 'cheated' claims former Indian cricketer
Former Indian cricketer turned analyst Aakash Chopra has accepted that Shreyas Iyer was cheated out of being included in the Indian side despite his outstanding performances.
"If you are Shreyas Iyer or his fan, you have the right to feel a bit cheated today," said Aakash Chopra.
He also affirmed that "Shreyas has done everything to be part of the Indian side for the Asia Cup, from taking PBKS to the finals, the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy domination and emerging as India's premier batter in the Champions Trophy; Iyer has done it all, but despite that he has not been picked."
"Shreyas Iyer cannot be brought into the side as a batter due to India's confirmed players in the no. 3 and no. 4 spots, which implies Iyer would be sent in at no. 5, which does not seem a likely role for the middle-order batter," suggests Akash Chopra, claiming this team has been picked as per slots.
Aakash Chopra backs Tilak Varma's retention in the Indian team
Chopra reasons that since India has picked a squad as per slots and has only kept likely backups for all-rounders, wicket-keepers and bowlers, Tilak Varma has been picked to retain his no. 3 spot.
He claims, "Tilak Varma is currently the no. 2-ranked T20I batter by ICC, while he is also one of the few players to have scored consecutive hundreds in T20I cricket, which he did against South Africa on the Protea soil. This makes him a deserving player; hence, an in-form player cannot be left out to do justice to some other player."
This has provided an insight into Agarkar's statement of why Shreyas has not been included; however, Chopra suggested that he has a strong feeling that Shreyas will be back in the T20I side till the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Samson out, Jitesh In - Aakash Chopra drops concerns over India's wicket-keeping subs
Aakash Chopra has hinted towards Sanju Samson being dropped from the playing 11 in order to make way for Shubman Gill at the top. Gill's return marks Samson's exit, which implies that Jitesh Sharma would probably be brought in as a middle-order wicket-keeper batsman.
This seems ok; however, in case of any injury or illness to Jitesh, India would only be left with Sanju Samson, who is not a middle-order batter by any standards. It has previously been found that Samson, as a middle-order batter, is of immense concern, which Chopra too recognizes.
