Indian Head Coach Gautam Gambhir again shed light on Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the India Test squad for the England tour. Gambhir pointed out Iyer and stated that anyone can come back to the squad if he is in good form.

Shreyas Iyer has been phenomenal in all formats after being dropped from the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) central contract. Iyer made a stunning comeback by smashing two centuries in the Ranji Trophy and led Mumbai to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024-25.

Gautam Gambhir’s hint on Shreyas Iyer

Gautam Gambhir hinted that Shreyas Iyer could be called up to the India Test squad, as the team management is open to accepting players who are in good form and can contribute to the team.

The Indian head coach also stated that the selectors could select only 18 players for the England tour, but if any player plays well in the domestic circuit or is in good form then the player will be called at any point during any series.

"Look, anyone can be called. Anyone can be called if they are in good form. We could only pick 18, and the chairman-selector has already answered that question. For me, I think it's always about being open to people who are in good form and who can come and deliver." Gautam Gambhir said in the press conference.

Iyer has been in good form in recent times as he smashed 604 runs in 17 matches in IPL 2025 and also led his franchise to the final of the IPL 2025 season.

Will Shreyas Iyer get a chance in between the England tour?

Shreyas Iyer has not been given a place in the Indian Test team for the England tour, so he won't be playing the initial matches, but if any player gets injured during the Test series, then Iyer might be called up.

The selectors have picked only three middle-order players, including skipper Shubman Gill, and if any middle-order player gets injured or does not look good in the series might be replaced by Iyer.

The India team might lack experience in the England tour after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement, and Iyer’s experience will be crucial for him to earn a recall.

Ajit Agarkar's take on Shreyas

After announcing the India Test squad, chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that currently, there is no room for Shreyas Iyer in the Test setup. Agarkar agreed Shreyas has played exceptionally well in the domestic circuit, but currently, Iyer has to wait for his opportunity.

Iyer is among a rare list of Indian batters who scored a Test ton on their debut match. He has played 14 Test matches and scored 811 runs at an average of 35.3. The Mumbai batter was released from the Test squad midway when England toured India in 2024.
