Shreyas Iyer is excited to make his long-awaited return to the international arena after a six-month break with the ongoing three-match ODI series against England. The year 2024 had been a roller-coaster for the Indian middle-order batter, as he lost his place in the Test squad and was dropped from the BCCI’s central contract for missing domestic cricket.

Shreyas Iyer’s last appearance for India was during the Sri Lanka tour in August 2024. He had a disappointing Sri Lanka tour, scoring just 38 runs in three ODIs. However, he still retained his spot in the squad for the ongoing ODI series against England and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Shreyas Iyer reflects on his comeback journey

All thanks to his strong comeback in the domestic season, where the 30-year-old led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL 2024 title, as well as helping Mumbai to win the Ranji Trophy 2023-24, Irani Cup, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25.

Reflecting on his journey, Shreyas Iyer shared how he overcame setbacks through self-belief and resilience, as he is ready to shine once again on the international stage. Iyer believes his time away from international cricket has provided valuable lessons while calling himself a “champion.”

Shreyas Iyer said in a video posted by BCCI on its website, “I feel this gap that I got from international cricket has given me a lot of learnings. To be honest, I don't run behind success; I follow a certain type of routine and preparation, which will take me towards success. For me, a champion is…me. It is all in the mind; I personally feel there is no one to support you other than yourself. Keep elevating yourself, transforming yourself from one level to another, and you will never cry over spilt milk.”

Iyer further highlighted the importance of staying in the present and said that he is really grateful that he won so many championships in 2024. Appreciating his journey, the Indian batter stresses that success is the result of consistent effort and learning from both wins and losses.

The Punjab Kings (PBSK) skipper also emphasized the value of humility and showing gratitude as you achieve more. The right-hander noted, “If you run behind something, you'll definitely get it, but there's a journey towards it; it's not that you get it overnight.”

Shreyas also expressed his excitement about returning to the Indian cricket team and insisted that he is only focusing on the ODI series at the moment. He shared his pride in wearing the national jersey and promised to give his best with full energy in every match for India.

It give me chills every time I wear the Indian jersey: Shreyas Iyer

Iyer signed off by saying, “I love to be in the present, and that's what I'm going to do, focus on the ODI series right now match by match. The learnings, the knowledge that I would be gaining out of this, especially coming after a long time in joining the team, give me chills every time I wear the Indian team jersey, that logo, and the emblem on my helmet. It's a proud moment, and I would absolutely play the game with full energy and give my best.”
