The announcement of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad has triggered massive debate, as Shreyas Iyer, one of the most consistent performers this season, has been snubbed once again. Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion has left many frustrated, and Aakash Chopra openly questioned the selectors’ decision.
The former Indian batter has called Iyer’s exclusion from the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 as one of the biggest surprises of the selection. Iyer made over 600 runs and guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the IPL 2025 final. He was also in sensational form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Ranji Trophy.

The Mumbaikar also lifted the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year. Despite this golden run, he finds no place in the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Reacting to his snub, Chopra believes that Iyer has done everything a player possibly can, but the selectors continue to look elsewhere.

Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel, “Shreyas Iyer not being there is a big story. What more will Shreyas Iyer have to do? What more can you do than what you have already done? You had a 600-plus-run IPL season, took the team to the final, scored runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, played Ranji, and won the Champions Trophy. That's all you can do as a human being.”

Well, Iyer might miss the Asia Cup 2025, but the cricket expert predicted that the right-handed batter will definitely make the cut in India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, as the Men in Blue are all set to play 15 T20Is before the mega event in the country and Sri Lanka.
Chopra further noted, “This is the Asia Cup team. Don't associate the World Cup with it because there are 15 T20Is after this. The world changes in 15 T20Is. If he keeps scoring runs in ODIs, sooner or later, Shreyas Iyer will be part of the team. I have a strong feeling that Shreyas Iyer will be a part of India's T20 World Cup team.”
The commentator further said that it was really surprising for him that Shreya Iyer’s name was not also among the five reserves for the upcoming continental tournament. He pointed out that the power hitters like Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh have been trusted for lower-order roles despite their failure, and that’s understandable.

Aakash Chopra says Indian selectors’ move sends worrying signal for Shreyas Iyer’s future
But even the youngsters like Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Prasidh Krishna have been kept in the reserves, so the former Indian batter was disappointed. How could the selectors have overlooked Iyer? He feels this move sends a worrying signal for the stylish middle-order batter’s future, despite his consistent performances across the formats.
Chopra signed off by saying, “A place could have been created in the reserve players at least, where you have kept Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Prasidh Krishna. This player's name could have been there. You haven't kept it there either, and that doesn't send a great signal. The clarity in front of Shreyas' name is completely not there.”
