After the high-profile retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket, another shocking retirement seems to be on the cards in Indian cricket. As the India National Cricket Team is going through the transition phase, Shreyas Iyer is likely to take the Hardik Pandya route.

After massive back troubles, Hardik Pandya gave up on Test cricket, and now Shreyas Iyer is considering the same move. The Indian all-rounder has now become the vital cog of the India team in the T20I and ODI formats after keeping himself away from red-ball cricket.

However, Hardik Pandya has not officially announced retirement from Test cricket but has made it clear that his body can’t handle the five days’ hard work on the field, and the BCCI has also decided to keep the all-rounder away from red-ball cricket, even in domestic cricket.

Now, Shreyas Iyer is planning to shock the Indian selectors and the fans by stepping away from Test cricket, at least unofficially. Recently, Iyer stepped down as India A captain and withdrew from the ongoing second unofficial test against Australia A in Lucknow at the last moment.

The right-handed batter returned to Mumbai just hours before the match, citing personal reasons, forcing the selectors to name Dhruv Jurel as captain for the game. His sudden exit sparked speculations about Test's future, as the Indian selectors are gearing up to name the squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies at home.

Shreyas Iyer to distance himself from Test cricket, decided to focus only on white-ball formats

But the story is completely different from the notions. As reported by News 24, Iyer is not fully committed to red-ball cricket due to persistent back issues, which make it difficult for him to endure five-day matches. Sources hinted that Iyer now wants to focus entirely on white-ball formats.

A News 24 journalist was quoted as saying by the top BCCI official, “Shreyas Iyer is not very keen on playing Test cricket because of his back injury. He can't stand on the field for five days. He wants to only focus on white-ball cricket. Most likely to miss the West Indies series.”

Despite being a key figure in India’s ODI setup, Iyer has struggled to secure a spot in Tests and has even missed the England tour and the Asia Cup 2025 despite helping India to lift the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Punjab Kings (PBKS) to reach the IPL 2025.

Now, Iyer’s future in the longer format looks uncertain as he prioritizes fitness and white-ball cricket.

India A to face Australia A in three unofficial ODIs

Notably, after the four-day red-ball matches, India A will take on Australia A in a three-match unofficial ODI series at Green Park, Kanpur.

The series will kick off on September 30, with Rajat Patidar leading a 13-man squad in the first game. For the remaining matches, Tilak Varma, who is currently part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad in the UAE, will take over as captain.
