Mumbai are set to receive a major boost with Shreyas Iyer joining the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, regular captain and all-rounder Shardul Thakur is ruled out of the tournament due to injury concerns, and Iyer will take over the leadership role and captain Mumbai in their next two matches.
Iyer is set to return for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting with their Elite Group C clash against Himachal Pradesh in Jaipur on January 6. He will also play Mumbai’s final group match against Punjab on January 8. After that, Iyer will join the Indian cricket team for the ODI series against New Zealand.
Shreyas Iyer Set to Lead Mumbai After Shardul Thakur's Injury
According to Sportstar, Shreyas Iyer will take charge of Mumbai after regular captain Shardul Thakur suffered a calf injury while bowling in the previous match against Maharashtra. Thakur has undergone an MRI scan and is likely to be ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.
Iyer is set to lead Mumbai in their remaining Vijay Hazare Trophy fixtures, including the final group-stage match against Punjab on January 8. He has already received fitness clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, allowing him to feature in the tournament.
After completing his domestic duties, Iyer will join the Indian squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, subject to maintaining his fitness status.
Shardul Thakur suffered a calf injury during their Vijay Hazare Trophy loss to Maharashtra in Jaipur, forcing him to leave the field midway through his spell. The issue has raised concerns about his availability for the remainder of the tournament.
Notably, the Mumbai Cricket Association is yet to issue an official update. According to the Times of India, Thakur could miss the rest of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He is expected to stay back in Jaipur under close supervision, with his return depending on scan results and medical feedback.
“Even if he misses the rest of the league games of the VHT, Shardul will stay back in Jaipur and will be monitored regularly by the Mumbai team’s physio. Depending on the result of his scans, a call will be made about his future availability,” a source tracking developments told this paper.
His absence could be a big setback for Mumbai, as Thakur has been their standout bowler so far. He has taken 11 wickets in five matches at an impressive average of 9.54, including match-winning spells against Chhattisgarh and Goa.
Mumbai Receive Major Boost as Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shivam Dube Join Squad in Jaipur
Mumbai are set to get a big boost ahead of their next Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shivam Dube have joined the squad in Jaipur.
Mumbai are currently second in Elite Group C, behind Punjab. They have won four of their five matches and have 16 points. However, their heavy loss to Maharashtra has badly affected their net run rate.
Mumbai need to win at least one of their remaining matches to qualify for the knockouts. Winning both games would also help improve their net run rate.
There is also good news on the injury front. Sarfaraz Khan, Mumbai’s top scorer in the tournament with 220 runs in three matches, missed the last game due to quadriceps pain. The batter is expected to return for the next match against Himachal Pradesh.
