Shreyas Iyer skips South Africa tour, prolongs stay in Australia after injury setback
PC: X

Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has parted ways with the Indian team and decided to prolong his stay in Australia to receive adequate treatment for the injury to his rib. After the massive update, his participation in the South Africa series is thrown into major doubt.

During India's campaign against Australia in the three-match ODI tour, Shreyas Iyer emerged as one of the major forces in the Indian batting order. His 61 in the second game in Adelaide and an 118-run partnership alongside Rohit Sharma saved India from another humiliating collapse like Perth.

However, Shreyas suffered a serious blow to his chest as he ran backward and lunged onto a ball, diving forward to make a stunning grab. His left ribs struck the ground bluntly, and the pain was all over his face.

Shreyas Iyer stays in Sydney, delays return to India after a major Injury

Though the updates had cleared that Shreyas Iyer did not have any fractures as observed through multiple scans performed on him after being taken off to the hospital quickly after he left the ground in utter pain. He did not come out to bat for India, as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli wound up the chase with 9 wickets remaining.

Despite no fracture, it would take some more days before he gets a clearance from the Sydney hospital to travel and head back home to India, as per RevSportz. As Iyer reaches India, he is expected to quickly report to the CoE and start his recovery as well as rehabilitation process under the watchful eyes of the medicos of the BCCI.

Shreyas Iyer is not a part of India's T20I Squad against Australia

While Iyer is yet to arrive in India, the likes of Virat Kohli have already flown back to London, and Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have returned to India. The remaining players, including skipper Shubman Gill, have joined the Indian T20I side, who landed in Canberra on Saturday.

Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rinku Singh were among the players who arrived in the Australian capital on Saturday. Shreyas Iyer is not a part of the Indian T20I side as he is yet to make his comeback in the format.

Several well-known names like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mohammed Siraj are also not included in the T20I XI. The coaching and the support staff have also caught up with the rest of the team on Sunday.

If Shreyas misses out on South Africa tour, will it open the ODI comeback doors for Rishabh Pant?

After such a grave injury, Shreyas Iyer's comeback period might be predicted over 3-4 weeks, though nothing has been revealed officially yet. Under such circumstances, Shreyas will be snubbed from the home ODI series against South Africa as his return before 30th November seems tough

Rishabh Pant, who once lost his no. 4 spot to Shreyas Iyer, might cite this as the perfect opportunity to make an ODI comeback. He is expected to return to international action with the South Africa Test series. The call from the Indian selectors will be much anticipated until the squads are announced for the contest.
