Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been sidelined from the Test team since the home series against England earlier this year. Shreyas Iyer is making a strong comeback in domestic cricket to boost his hopes of a national team return by smashing back-to-back centuries for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy.

The Mumbai cricketer has had a challenging few months in his career. Iyer was excluded from the central contract list and the Test squad. The right-handed batter had a disappointing Duleep Trophy campaign while captaining India D. He started his Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season with a duck against Baroda.

The 29-year-old cricketer needed to make a strong statement to stay in the race for the middle-order spots in the Test team. Shreyas scored a 142-run knock-off 190 deliveries in the first innings against Maharashtra. He continued his batting form with another hundred against Odisha in the red-ball tournament.

Shreyas Iyer Reaches His 15th Century In First-Class Cricket

Mumbai's chances of progressing to the knockout stage depend on a victory in the ongoing match. Shreyas Iyer returned to the team after missing the Ranji Trophy match against Tripura. He reached his 15th first-class century during the match. Iyer reached his century in just 101 balls with 14 fours and 2 sixes.

Mumbai got off to a solid start with Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Siddhesh Lad's partnership for the second wicket. Angkrish fell just eight runs short of his maiden century. The young opening batter was given the chance to open in place of Prithvi Shaw, who was dropped from the squad due to fitness issues.

Shreyas Iyer Not Included in India Squad for BGT 2024-25 Series

Shreyas Iyer failed to make it into the India A and India squads for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, set to commence on November 22 in Perth. Middle-order batters KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan, who struggled to score runs against New Zealand, have retained their places in the squad.

India Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Jasprit Bumrah (vc), Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammad Shami, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Sarfaraz Khan, Virat Kohli, Prasidh Krishna, Rishabh Pant (wk), KL Rahul, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar

Shreyas Iyer Made His Test Debut for Team India in 2021

Shreyas made a memorable Test debut against New Zealand in November 2021. He scored a century in his first innings, which remains his only Test century. Iyer performed well in subcontinental conditions, but he struggled to score runs in swinging and seaming conditions in overseas Test matches.

Iyer’s performances declined as his career progressed. After a poor run against Australia in 2023 and struggles in South Africa, he failed to make an impact in the first two Tests against England and was dropped from the squad midway through the series. Iyer has scored 811 runs at an average of 36.86.
