‘Shreyas Iyer won’t tolerate rubbish’ message sent to Gautam Gambhir before Australia ODIs

Shreyas Iyer has quickly proven that he is not just a star batter but also a born leader. The recently appointed India’s ODI captain, Shreyas Iyer, has already left a massive mark in the IPL. He is the first captain who has led three different franchises to the IPL finals.

Under the Mumbaikar’s captaincy, Punjab Kings (PBKS) reached the IPL final for the first time since 2014, and his leadership has become the talk of the cricketing world. Earlier this month, Shubman Gill was named India’s new ODI captain, and Iyer as his deputy.

While Gambhir demands authority, fierce passion, and unrelenting discipline, Iyer doesn’t tolerate nonsense and is clear-headed and disciplined. However, they both are firm decision-makers with clean communication and zero tolerance for complacency.

Ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series between India and Australia, starting on October 19 in Perth, Punjab Kings batter Shashank Singh has been in awe of Iyer’s approach on and off the field.

He pointed out that Shreyas Iyer's presence carries a unique aura and an unshakable mindset that commands respect, saying he runs the team with clarity, purpose, focus, and discipline.

He also called Shreyas Iyer the best captain he has ever played for. He further gave credit to Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting for the PBKS’ success this year. However, they lost the trophy to RCB.

Shashank Singh was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo: “Shreyas is at a different level altogether. He has his own aura, a different mindset altogether. Won't talk rubbish, won't tolerate rubbish. When he bats in the nets, he knows what he is doing. If someone asks me, ‘Who is the best captain you have played under?’ Hands down, Shreyas Iyer.”

He lauded Ricky Ponting for simplifying the complexities of cricket for the players. Shashank said, “Ricky sir has made the game very simple. Cricket can be a complicated sport at times. If you ask a batsman, the leg shouldn't go across, and the head shouldn't fall, but Ricky Sir has simplified the game brilliantly. You know why he is a great coach? It's because he knows what a player wants.”

Shashank Singh refuses to give up on his India dream

Well, despite a strong run with the bat and impressive consistency in IPL and domestic cricket, Shashank continues to wait for his big break in the Indian cricket team. The Punjab Kings star hasn’t yet received an India or India A call-up, but that hasn’t shaken his determination.

He remains focused on improving every aspect of his game, from power-hitting to adapting to different conditions, with the dream of not just playing for India but winning matches for the country.

Shashank signed off by saying, “My job is to tick the boxes, to work hard. I can only control the things that are in my hand. But one thing is that I still have a dream. That dream of winning matches for India. It will happen. The belief is still there.”
