He suffered an impact injury to his lower left rib cage, and as per BCCI, he has a laceration injury to the spleen. The BCCI Medical team, as well as the Sydney specialists, are closely monitoring his injury status, and he is medically stable and recovering. The team doctor is staying in Sydney alongside Iyer to evaluate his day-to-day progress.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen," the BCCI stated.

"He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."

The recovery period might extend after a laceration injury

Earlier, it was revealed that the scans had not shown any fracture, and hence, Shreyas Iyer's recovery schedule was thought to be around 3 weeks, with a possible return ahead of the South Africa series, which starts on the 30th of November.

However, Shreyas, who features only in ODI cricket as of now, has now been reported to have a laceration to the spleen and hence, his likely date of recovery might be extended further.

"Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it's difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket," an NDTV source revealed.

Shreyas Iyer's former teammate slams a double-century for the new side

Shreyas Iyer plays for Mumbai in the domestic tournament and has played for Delhi Capitals in the past in the IPL. Iyer hence shared the dressing room with Indian youngster Prithvi Shaw a lot throughout his career.

Shaw, who was criticized over his lack of discipline and determination, as well as fitness, has made a strong comeback after a move to Maharashtra from Mumbai proved the right bid for him. The batter who missed out on a first-class hundred for nearly 1.5 years has made a comeback with a double century in just the second game of the Ranji Trophy 2025.

Shaw's innings has been power-packed and stunning as he reached the milestone with a strike rate of nearly 145 in the red-ball format.
