India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer remains under close medical observation in a Sydney hospital after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia. Shreyas Iyer is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following internal bleeding caused by a hard fall while fielding.
Iyer sustained a deep impact injury to his left lower rib cage, which later scans confirmed had resulted in a laceration to his spleen. Although the Mumbaikar is reported to be medically stable, the doctors have decided to keep him in the ICU for at least the next two days.

Medical specialists in Sydney are monitoring him closely, and the next 48 hours are said to be crucial in determining Iyer’s recovery path. If the Indian batter’s condition doesn’t improve within two days, he could stay for up to a week in the ICU.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely coordinating with the medical team in Sydney and has been in constant touch with specialists in India. The team’s doctor continues to stay by Iyer’s side to monitor his daily progress and ensure he receives the best care possible.
BCCI arranges travel for Shreyas Iyer’s family amid critical 48-hour phase
Meanwhile, arrangements are being made by the BCCI for a member of Iyer’s family to fly to Sydney immediately. While his sister was initially expected to travel, there is a possibility that one of his parents may accompany her to be with the cricketer during his recovery in Sydney.
A source close to the developments was quoted as saying by the Times of India, “Arrangements are being made by the BCCI. As of now, it is not clear whether both parents will go, but someone will be with him at the earliest in the hospital.
As of yesterday, Iyer's sister was supposed to travel to Australia, and even the paperwork has been initiated, but it could well be the case that one of the parents accompanies her.”

For now, the focus remains on stabilizing his condition, with the next 48 hours considered crucial in determining how soon Iyer can begin his rehabilitation.
BCCI issues update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury
On the other hand, the BCCI has confirmed that Iyer is receiving continuous treatment and is recovering steadily under expert supervision.
The BCCI said in an official statement, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower ribcage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.”
Notably, Iyer could manage only 72 runs in his two innings as India lost the three-match ODI series 1-2 to Australia. However, the right-handed batter is not part of India’s squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, starting on October 29 at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
