A major setback has hit Indian cricket, as ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out for nearly two months after suffering a laceration of the spleen during the third and final ODI against Australia last week at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney.

The unfortunate incident, which occurred while Iyer was diving to complete a tough catch, led to internal bleeding, and the Indian middle-order batter had to undergo an urgent medical procedure in Sydney. Thankfully, Iyer’s condition has now stabilized, and he was shifted out of the ICU.

Shreyas Iyer to miss South Africa series after spleen injury

Doctors have advised complete rest, which means Iyer will miss India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa next month. As reported by RevSportz, Iyer is set to miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa in November-December at home.

Additionally, the Indian vice-captain’s participation in another home series against New Zealand in January also looks uncertain, as he is unlikely to regain full match fitness in time.

This extended recovery period could severely impact his ICC T20 World Cup 2026 chances, with the Indian cricket team management expected to finalize their 15-member squad by January.

If Iyer fails to make it back before then, his next appearance in Indian colors may only come during the white-ball series in England in July 2026. On the other hand, the BCCI sources revealed that Iyer is not expected to return to competitive cricket before January 2026.

Doctors use an advanced Trans-Catheter Procedure to save Shreyas Iyer from life-threatening injury

His recovery from the spleen injury will take more time than initially hoped, and the medical team does not want to rush his comeback until he is fully fit and ready to play again.

Notably, the stylish right-handed batter had to undergo a special medical procedure called “interventional trans-catheter embolization” to control the internal bleeding from his injury.

In this procedure, doctors insert a catheter into an artery to block the blood flow to stop the bleeding and prevent further damage. This method helps avoid major surgery and faster recovery if done in time.

Shreyas Iyer's freak injury at SCG

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer sustained a life-threatening injury during the third ODI against Australia after pulling off a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey. While running backward at full pace, Iyer managed to complete the catch but landed awkwardly, crashing onto the turf.

The impact left him in visible pain as the team physio rushed to his aid. Though Iyer initially walked off the field on his own, his condition worsened soon after reaching the dressing room. His vital signs reportedly dropped sharply, forcing the medical team to rush him to a Sydney hospital.

Scans revealed a laceration in his spleen, which had caused dangerous internal bleeding. Doctors immediately shifted Iyer to the ICU, where he underwent an emergency medical procedure to stop the bleeding. Fortunately, the timely treatment stabilized the cricketer’s condition.

Later, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that Iyer did not require major surgery, undergoing just a medical procedure. Shreyas Iyer remains under observation as he continues his recovery in Sydney, and the Indian batter thanked his well-wishers for their support, love, and prayers.
