Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has become the highest run-scorer in Test cricket since the start of 2025. The right-handed batter has enjoyed excellent form in the longest format and has consistently scored runs for India in both home and away conditions.

Gill achieved the milestone during the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh on Saturday, June 6, 2026. India ended Day 1 in a strong position at 368/3, with Gill remaining unbeaten. Opener KL Rahul also smashed a century before being dismissed for 100.

Shubman Gill Continues Record-Breaking Run as India Test Captain

Shubman Gill has continued his outstanding form since becoming India's Test captain. The right-hander has quickly established himself as one of the most consistent performers in Test cricket.

Since the start of 2025, Gill has scored 1,086 runs in 17 innings at an average of 77.6, with six centuries and one fifty, the most runs by any batter in the format during this period. Gill enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, scoring 983 runs in nine Tests at an average of 70.21, including five centuries.

He scored an unbeaten 103 against Afghanistan on the opening day. It was his 11th Test hundred, and he became the fastest Indian captain by time to reach 1,000 Test runs as captain, achieving the milestone in just 351 days.

India Overcome Early Scare to Take Control

India finished Day 1 of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in a strong position at 368/3. Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 103, while Rishabh Pant was unbeaten on 50. Earlier, KL Rahul scored a century and Sai Sudharsan contributed 81 to put the hosts in command in New Chandigarh.

However, India's strong position did not tell the full story of the opening session. Both openers got lucky early in their innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dropped on 11 at gully, while KL Rahul survived on 16 after Afghanistan decided not to review a possible edge behind the stumps.

Afghanistan finally broke the opening partnership when Jaiswal fell for 24 after edging a ball down the leg side. The visitors bowled with discipline in the early stages, with Ziaur Rahman Sharifi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mohammad Saleem Safi consistently challenging the Indian batters outside off stump.

Sai Sudharsan Overcomes Early Test Before Falling for 81

Sai Sudharsan also faced a tough challenge after coming to the crease. Afghanistan targeted a weakness that England had exposed during his tour last year, setting a leg-side field and trying to force mistakes with a clear bowling plan.

The left-hander handled the tactic well and scored most of his runs on the leg side. At times, though, he looked uncertain outside off stump. He also survived an early chance when a catch was dropped at first slip.

Sudharsan's innings ended on 81 when wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai caught him off Mohammad Saleem Safi. By then, he had shared an important partnership with Rahul before Gill and Pant took charge in the final session to put India in a dominant position at stumps.
