Team India captain Shubman Gill has become a talking point ahead of the third ODI after reportedly carrying a personal alkaline water RO system worth around three lakh rupees. Gill arrived in Indore for the final match of the three-game ODI series against New Zealand at the Holkar Stadium on January 18.
The third ODI is a must-win game for India with the series tied at 1-1. A victory will help India seal the series, but the team has another concern to deal with. Despite being known as India’s cleanest city, Indore is currently facing a serious clean water problem, with contaminated water having claimed several lives.
Shubman Gill Takes Extra Precautions Amid Indore Water Crisis
According to reports, Shubman Gill carried a high-end water purifier worth around INR 3 lakh. He installed the system in his hotel room to ensure safe drinking water and avoid health risks.
The Indian team usually stays in top hotels and receives packaged drinking water. However, Gill chose not to take any chances. Hotel staff reportedly had limited information about the purifier or the technology used in it.
Indore is currently facing a serious public health crisis, as contaminated drinking water in the Bhagirathpura area has triggered an outbreak of water-borne diseases.
So far, the crisis has claimed 23 lives. The state government has officially confirmed 15 deaths before the High Court, while compensation has been provided to 21 affected families. Six patients remain in the ICU, with one shifted to a general ward and three continuing on ventilator support.
Shubman Gill Carries Alkaline Water RO for Health Reasons
According to Dainik Jagran, Shubman Gill has been carrying an alkaline water RO system with him for the past six to seven months. He drinks water only from it and takes his health seriously.
Gill believes alkaline water helps with hydration and recovery, as it absorbs better in the body and has antioxidant benefits. The report also stated that former India captain Virat Kohli uses alkaline water. A source close to Gill said many athletes now follow the same practice.
The report clarified that this habit has no link to the recent contaminated water deaths in Indore. Athletes prefer carrying such systems because alkaline water is not easily available in every city, especially during long tours.
India Look to Repeat Success at Holkar in Series Decider
India return to the Holkar Stadium in Indore with strong memories from their last ODI at the venue in September 2023. In that match, Shubman Gill scored 104 and Shreyas Iyer hit 105, helping India post 399 and beat Australia by 99 runs.
India will hope for a similar outcome in the series decider against New Zealand. Gill leads the side, while Shreyas returns after a long injury break.
In Vadodara, Virat Kohli scored 93 to guide India home, but the bowlers conceded 300 runs. In Rajkot, India struggled with the bat and managed only 285, despite KL Rahul scoring an unbeaten 112. New Zealand then chased the target comfortably, sealing the win with 15 balls to spare.
